Watermelon Bonnet Crochet Pattern

Materials:
● Yarn: Approximately 65 yards (40 of red or Gauge:
pink, 10 of white or cream, 10 of green, and 5 of 8 sts and 10 rows = 2 inches (5 centimeters)
black) of worsted (4) yarn for smaller sizes, and in Single Crochet
approx. 95 yards (55 of red or pink, 10 of white or ***It is important to check your gauge!***

Abbreviations: 3-6 Months: 14-17”
● Star Stitch: Pull up one loop in the next 6 sts 6-12 Months: 16-19”
to where you have 7 total loops on your hook 1-3 Years: 18-20”
(including loop from the previous HDC) and pull loop
through all 7 sts on hook.
● HDC: Half Double Crochet
● SC: Single Crochet
● CH: Chain
● TW: Turn Work

Newborn Pattern
Note: All sts starting with row 3 and on should be worked through both loops of the sts
Ch58 with green yarn
Row 1: HDC into second ch from hook, *Star Stitch, Ch1, HDC into next stitch* Repeat 7 more times
(25 total sts – not including turning chain)
Row 2: Ch1, TW, HDC (into second ch from hook), *Skip next stitch, HDC 4 times into center of Star
Stitch, HDC into next stitch* Repeat 7 more times (41 total sts)
Pick up white yarn (you will be floating the white and green yarns across the back of your project
for the next row)
Row 3: Ch1, TW, *SC (green), SC (white)* Repeat all the way across, ending in green
Drop green and cut yarn leaving a 5-7 inch tail
Rows 4-6: Ch1, TW, SC across row
Pick up pink or red yarn (you will be floating the white and pink yarns across the back of your
project for the next row)
Row 7: Ch1, TW, *SC (pink), SC (white)* Repeat all the way across, ending in pink
Drop white and cut yarn leaving a 5-7 inch tail
Rows 8-10: Ch1, TW, SC across row
Pick up black yarn (for the black sts throughout the next rows you will be cutting a piece of black
yarn approx 8 inches long for each individual black stitch and crocheting with that. At the end of
the project you will be tying these sts in a knot on the back of your project)

Repeat 2 more times, SC2tog, SC3 (36 total sts – including beginning chain)
Round 2: *SC2tog, SC3* Repeat 6 more times, SC1 (29 total sts)
Round 3: *SC2tog, SC2* Repeat 6 more times, SC1 (22 total sts)
Round 4: *SC2tog, SC1* Repeat 6 more times, SC1 (15 total sts)
Round 5: *SC2tog* Repeat around until the back of the bonnet is closed. Fasten off and cut a 7-9
inch tail. Use yarn or tapestry needle and yarn tail to sew up any gap in the back of the bonnet.
Secure and weave in all ends. Go back to all black sts and tie a knot on the inside and cut yarn
tails.

Cut six strands of yarn approx. 30 inches long and pull them in a loop through the corner of the
bonnet. Pull the ends of the yarn through this loop (this attaches the yarn without any knots, and
makes your project look smoother). Separate the yarn into three sections and braid them to
desired length. Secure and cut yarn evenly on the ends. Repeat on the other corner as well.
