Introduction to Social Studies
Social studies is the study of people in relation to each other and to their world.
It’s an issues focused and inquiry-based, knowledge base subject that attracts upon
history, geography, ecology, economics, law, philosophy, politics and other social
sciences disciplines. Social studies foster students’ understanding of and involvement in
sensible and moral issues that face their communities and humankind. Social studies is
integral to the method of enabling students to develop an understanding of who they
are, what they need to become and therefore the society they want to live in.
Social studies develops the key values and attitudes, data, understanding, skills,
and methods necessary for students to become an active and accountable citizens,
engaged within the democratic process and tuned in to their capability to impact
modification in their communities, society, and the world.
In my own opinion, social studies is a very interesting subject and it can change
your whole perspective about something. Gaining more knowledge about it can help
you to be a better citizen in the future and based on the video provided there are five
methods to obtain more knowledge about social studies. (1) Inquiry Method, (2)
Observatory Method, (3) Fieldtrip Method, (4) Learning through Concepts, and (5)
Discussion Method.
Inquiry method in social studies is a process of asking and answering key social
studies questions. An approach to learning that involves a process of exploring the
natural or material world that leads to asking questions and making discoveries in the
search of new understandings. This is one of the ways to gain more knowledge about
social studies because you are encourage to ask question that is meaning to you. The
teacher’s job in an inquiry-learning environment is not to provide knowledge, but instead
to help the students along the process of discovering knowledge themselves.
Observatory method, as the name implies, it is a way of gaining or collecting
knowledge through observing. The students has to immerse itself in the setting where
the data was coming from, while taking notes or recording.
Fieldtrip method is a visit to a place outside the regular classroom or work place,
designed if you wish to achieve certain objectives that cannot be achieved by using
other means. In social studies, for example, you want to know more about the certain
people in a specific place and you want to see it yourself you can use the fieldtrip
method to gain something about that.
Learning through concepts or concept-based learning is driven by “big ideas”
rather than subject-specific content. Leading students to consider the context in which
they will use their understanding, concept-based learnings brings “real world” meaning
to content knowledge and skills. Students become more critical thinkers which is
essential to their ability to creatively solve problems in the 21 st century.
Discussion method, it is a group activity involving the teacher and the students to
define the problem and seek its solution. Discussion method are a variety of forums for
open-ended, collaborative exchange of ideas for the purpose of furthering students
thinking, learning, problem solving, understanding, or literary appreciation. You presents
multiple points of view, respond to the ideas of others, and reflect their own ideas in an
effort to build their knowledge, understanding, or interpretation of the matter at hand.
Gaining knowledge and studying social studies is very important because it helps
students to understand developments that are taking place in society and the world as
well as their roles in shaping the future of the nation. Social studies also encourages
students to engage in policy issues instead of just relying on the government to achieve
desired outcomes.
