Understanding Independent and Dependent Clauses

This document summarizes the key differences between independent and dependent clauses: - An independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence, while a dependent clause cannot because it leaves an idea unfinished. - Independent clauses are connected by coordinating conjunctions like "and", "but", "or", while dependent clauses usually begin with subordinating conjunctions like "if", "when", "because", etc. - Examples are given showing independent clauses that can stand alone and dependent clauses that need to be connected to an independent clause to complete the meaning.

Dear Mr Lily,

This is my answer to discussion 1, please correct it if something is wrong.

A clause is a group of words containing a subject and predicate and functioning as a
member of a complex or compound sentence.
Example : I graduated last year.

there are 2 types of clause : Independent Clauses and Dependent Clauses.

An independent clause functions on its own to make a meaningful sentence and looks much
like a regular sentence. In a sentence two independent clauses can be connected by
the coordinators: and, but, so, or, nor, for, yet, but A dependent clause cannot function on its
own because it leaves an idea or thought unfinished. It is also called subordinate clause.
Dependent clauses help the independent clauses complete the sentence. A dependent clause
alone cannot form a complete sentence.

Dear Mr Yudi,
This is my answer to discussion 3, please correct it if something is wrong.
An independent clause is a clause that stands alone as a whole sentence. Meanwhile, the
dependent clause is a clause that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence, dependent clauses
usually start with if, so, when, after, because, before, while, until, since, etc.
Example :

I read the whole story. When you saw me,
I love you. When he wakes up,
