From NCTE
n MYTH: 21st-century literacy is about
technology only.
REALITY: Although technology is important
to literacy in the new century, other
dimensions of learning are essential, like
written and oral communication skills very
highly, and collaboration, work ethic, critical
thinking, and leadership all rank higher than
proficiency in information technology.
From NCTE
n MYTH: Teachers who use technology in their
personal lives will use it in their classes.
REALITY: Teachers who use word
processing, spreadsheets, presentation
software, and Internet browsers at home do
not bring that knowledge into the classroom.
Two-thirds of all teachers report feeling
under-prepared to use technology in
teaching, even if they use computers to plan
lessons, access model lesson plans, and
create activities.
Do you agree? Why/why not?
n MYTH: Teachers need to be experts in
technology in order to use it effectively in
instruction.
REALITY: Effective teachers collaborate with
students to understand the information
landscape and think about its use. Since
success with technology depends largely
upon critical thinking and reflection, even
teachers with relatively little technological
skill can provide useful instruction.

Reading and Literacies:
A Socio-Historical
Perspective

READING
Reading is the practical management
of the world around us.
Reading allows us to make sense of
our experiences.
READING
n making sense of and managing
human experience and the world
n making sense of many different
“texts”
Throughout history, people have
“read”, have tried to make sense of,
many different kinds of “texts”
-- from the flight of birds
to facial expressions,
- from the handwriting on the wall
to the signs
of the times,
- from motives
to minds,
… and then some.
Language is a way to make reading
easier.
Language names the human
experience that we “read”.
Language helps us “make sense” of
what we experience.
Making sense is necessary for
communication.
Reading is a kind of communication.
When we read, we should be able to
“get” the message “sent” to us.
The way of “sending” a message has
changed.
Language has changed.
Reading has changed along with it.
…AND THE CHANGE CONTINUES…
CHANGING TIMES,
CHANGING NEEDS.
CHANGING NEEDS,
CHANGING WAYS OF LIFE.
CHANGING WAYS OF LIFE,
CHANGING PURPOSES.
CHANGING PURPOSES,
CHANGING TYPES AND USES OF
LANGUAGE AND LITERACY.

Remember:
Reading development is NOT
a process that grows and changes
by itself. It is correlated with other
aspects of child development -
physical, cognitive, linguistic, and
socio-emotional – among others.
Thus...
The development of 21st literacies among
students does and will not grow and
change by itself. Literacy, like reading, is
influenced by interacting factors.
Reminder!
Reading is an interactive process.

for effective instruction in 21st-
century literacies
- National Council of Teachers
of English (NCTE)
For Teachers
n an integrated approach,
helping students understand how to
access, evaluate, synthesize, and
contribute to information
n encouragement of interaction with and
among students
Some suggestions
n Encourage students to reflect regularly
about the role of technology in their
learning.
n Create a website and invite students to
use it to continue class discussions and
bring in outside voices.
Some suggestions
n Give students strategies for evaluating
the quality of information they find on
the Internet.
n Be open about your own strengths and
limitations with technology and invite
students to help you.
Some suggestions
n Explore technologies students are using
outside of class and find ways to
incorporate them into your teaching.
n Use a wiki to develop a multimodal
reader's guide to a class text.
n Include a broad variety of media and
genres in class texts.
Some suggestions
n Ask students to create a podcast to
share with an authentic audience.
n Give students explicit instruction about
how to avoid plagiarism in a digital
environment.
n Consult the resources on Partnership for
21st-Century Skills website.
