Hi-System Builders – this is the company where I conducted my On-the-Job Training. On my first
day of training, I was very nervous because I don’t know what task or job, they will assign to me. General
Manager, Engr. Samson K. Tomas, introduced me to Engr. Marlon Magalong and Engr. Jerand our site
engineers.
Our site Engineers accompanied me for a site visit in their ongoing projects in Baguio City. The
first site is a two-storey roof deck house and another two-storey house beside it. We also visited their
three ongoing five-storey dormitory building in different areas. During that moment, Engr. Marlon
taught me on how to get daily work update and terms that I’m not familiar in construction. I was able to
learn many things which are related in my course in a short period of time.
My first week was really good and my interest in construction grew a lot.

of the concrete. I really learned a lot in this training especially the role of a site engineer. I saw the
dedication, technical skills and how Engr. Marlon manage the people around him in site.
I was also asked to Assist Engr. Marlon to get the daily work update on the other sites.

This week was heavy as the previous week because the turnover of Bernardez site dated August
1, 2019. Our company have only 2 weeks to finish the remaining 5%. My task was to watch over the
workers while Engr. Marlon is getting work update on other sites. I enjoyed it because I was able to be
socialized with workers and learn many terms like the materials or tools that they are using. I was also
starting to be comfortable with the people I work with as well as in the workplace.
We also visited our new site that are currently installing a bank house and ready for layout. On
Friday, Engr. Samson Tomas set a meeting in Ginete site. He discussed about the errors or problems that
he saw in the site. I was so amazed for his leadership skills, decision making, project management,
excellent knowledge of design and visualization and his proven work experience. Because of the
meeting, I got overtime and went home 7pm in the evening. I was able to work on Saturday for me to
finish the training before the first semester starts.

19 Progress Report
This is my last week of On-the-Job Training, the task that I did this week were just the same as
the previous week. The weekly progress report in Ginete site was on 75%. Engr. Samson Tomas told me
to get overtime this week to fill up with my absences.
I was happy because I will finally finish my training but somehow sad because I will be leaving the
Company where I had lots of memories and I will be missing the people who teach a lot of things to me
related to my course. They are the one who helped me to love my course more and molding myself to
be the individual I am right now.

ASSESMENT OF PRACTICUM PROGRAM
The training I had in the Hi-System Builders is learning many experiences each day. I was exposed
in the actual work in construction, became more familiar with the terms that are usually using in
construction and learned what are the duties and responsibilities of a site engineer. To be specific, I
learned how to get the daily work update or man per day update in site, estimation of repair and the
process of construction in actual work. Aside from those things, I was able to realize the importance of
theories and formulas that were discussed in the school. Also, to appreciate even the simplest lessons
studied in school.
The people around me are very encouraging and motivating. They are very talented individuals, I
found that they were very solution-focused, positive, driven and god fearing. It was invigorating and
uplifting just to be around them, and this was one of the most motivating periods of my life.
The most memorable event during my practicum was when our project engineer called to pour a
concrete slab on our site in Bakakeng. At that day, the weather condition was bad because of drizzling
rain. His instruction was to finish the job in a day. I was assigned to count the concrete mix ratio to retain
the strength and quality of concrete. Our site engineer told us to work or move faster so we can finish it
on time.
My recommendation for the improvement of the Practicum program is that provide a OJT
manual for the students to be guided in conducting OJT.
My advice to those who ill take their practicum soon is that don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor
questions. They understand that you are learning and they must take their jobs seriously because this
practicum will really help develop their skills.
