I. Summary
This paper discuss three (3) different ways to reduce and eliminate adverse
impacts of solid waste. Providing ideal projects to utilize reusable and
recyclable waste. Introducing advantages of Oxo-Biodegradation to eliminate
harmful impacts of conventional plastics. Addressing the importance of
Solid Waste Management Awareness to local communities and develop unity
in protecting our environment. This project aims to undertakes and face the
issues of solid waste management in our city which includes environmental
damages and impacts of littering. Therefore, given the nature of waste
responsibility this paper does not limit to prevent the increased of waste
produced, problems and pollution. The outcome of this project expected to
utilize these environmental activities to improve and develop community
responsibilities in protecting Iligan City from negative impacts of solid waste
that may cause degradation of resources and social welfare.
II. Introduction
We are Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management students of STI College
Iligan that aims to reduce and eliminate adverse impacts of solid waste on
human health and environment through disciplinary relations among fields
as public health, livelihood planning and administrative, financial,
engineering and legal functions by creating a waste processing livelihood
programs, introducing Oxo-Biodegration and Solid Waste Awareness that
supports economic development.
Our main goal is to create and improve the socio-economic well-being of
identified workers in the informal economy. The project aimed at providing
livelihood opportunities by creating a plan, set-up, self-employment package
of services consisting of trainings, start-up kits, business counseling and
technical and marketing assistance services.
III. Needs/Problems
Solid waste management has always been an issue in Iligan City. Despite of
the implementation of No Segregation/No Collection of Waste per City
Ordinance and probably single-use plastic ban in the near future. Sacks of
not totally segregated waste/garbage are dumped on the city landfill, leaving
almost two thirds of landfill waste are biodegradable and degradable while
most are not compostable. Some plastic made products are also dumped on
landfills (except for the reusable/recyclable) that took years to degrade. Our
city’s landfill produces harmful gases like methane and carbon dioxide,
which are greenhouse gases that contributes to global warming. Landfills
also pollutes the local environment including water and the soil, because of
the garbage’s synthetic chemicals doesn’t mix with nature. Years of
decomposing/degrading of waste/garbage results to years of infinite landfill
gases. Use of plastics is inevitable. Plastics is unquestionably the world’s
most versatile materials, especially in modern life. Plastics is convenient and
cheap, and is very useful in terms of packaging. We use plastic bins, bags
and sacks to segregate our waste/garbage, even on the compostable and
biodegradable ones. We cannot even utilize reusable and recyclable plastics
and other junks. Getting rid of plastics is extremely difficult. Burning them
can give off toxic chemicals, while collecting and recycling them responsibly
is also difficult, because there are many different kinds and each has to be
recycled by a different process. We are literally drowning in plastic we
cannot get rid of, because we are using them in astounding quantities, every
day.
IV. Goals/Objectives
1.) Waste Processing Livelihood Programs: Utilize waste materials to
generate income, provide jobs and help reduce and eliminate waste on
landfills.
2.) Oxo-Biodegration: Implementation of Oxo-Biodegration to reduce
harmful effects of synthetic and conventional plastics.
3.) Solid waste management awareness: To provide enough knowledge on
how to reduce and maintain the volume of solid waste through the
implementation of waste reduction and recycling programs.
V. Procedures/Scope of Work
1.) Waste Processing Livelihood Programs
Create a livelihood projects that offers real opportunities to do something
good for the environment and make a profit as well by providing trainings,
plans, set-up, and self-employment package of services consisting of
trainings, start-up kits, business counseling and technical and marketing
assistance services with the following potential projects:
Hand-made stitched stuff toys and Pick a design, sew and fill it
key chains (Cloth, buttons, sewing shredded junks.
kits, key hooks and shredded tetra
packs, plastics and alike)
Bean bags made of sewed recycled Sew a cloth, canvass or tetra packs
clothes and shredded plastics, tetra and fill it with shredded junks.
packs and alike.
Furniture made of junks Create a furniture from old tires,
papers, woods, metals and plastics.
(needed skills training)
Bags, wallets and stationaries Sew or weave papers, cloths, tetra
packs and/or plastic wrappers.
Arts made from egg shells Sketch a design or patterns on a
canvass, use glue and fill in with
crushed/mince egg shells (add
colors)
Create new products from plastic by Temperature depends on the plastic
plastic extrusion (needs equipment) classification. (need shredder and
extrusion machine)
High quality plastic made products,
like kitchenware, furniture and
chairs.
We are thinking of including inmates in this livelihood program, therefore,
we’ll cluster the waste livelihood activities into three categories: Collectors,
which includes the waste pickers, segregators, dismantlers and transport
personnel; Retailers, which will buy the other materials aside from junks
like sewing kits, cloths, hooks, etc.; and the Artisans, persons that will
remake junks into a new items. Although, this does not limit the potential
clusters and/or investors.
2.) Oxo-Biodegration
Implementation of Oxo-Biodegration, to reduce harmful impacts of using
synthetic and conventional plastics. Since we can’t get rid of using plastics,
at least we can use an Oxo-biodegradable plastics that inert deep in landfill,
emits carbon dioxide slowly while degrading, but doesn’t emit methane,
suitable for use in high-speed machinery, can use same machinery and
workforce as for conventional plastic, compostable in vessel, same strength
as conventional plastic, same weight as conventional plastic, leak proof, no
genetically modified ingredients, safe for food contact, production uses no
fertilizers, pesticides or water, degrades anywhere on land or sea ( with the
presence of oxygen and right amount of heat and UV light), no limit on
availability of feedstock and with little or no on-cost.
3.) Solid Waste Management Awareness
Manage an awareness orientation about solid waste management,
concerning minimize using of conventional plastics, classification of plastics,
proper segregation, categorization on potential hazardous waste and
materials, environmental planning, conservation, introduction of Oxo-
Biodegration and Waste Processing Livelihood Products with the help of the
concerned authorities and organizations.

VII. Budget
Budgets depends on the approved project.
Shredders would cost 2,795-7,650php.
Implementation of Oxo-Biodegration and Solid waste awareness wouldn’t be
needing a lot of financial support, for the local government would take care
of it if considered and/or approved.
VIII. Key Personnel
Project Information team – Jeryle Rochmaine Joson, Cj Calunsag
Experts and trainers - (will be recruited once the project is approved)
Community participants and inmates - workers
Local Government
Potential sponsors & investors
IX. Evaluation
We are positive that these projects will be successful. In time, we can
provide jobs for the inmates and the community at the same time we can
save our environment. With this we can promote reduction in poverty and
garbage by utilizing waste/junks. Our team will do our best to improve and
sustain this projects. We’ll do a time to time monitoring and maintenance in
the projects and activities to determine the project’s progress and outcome.

XI. Conclusion
A new way of seeing waste. Providing opportunities to inmates and local
communities by utilizing waste materials that have significant potential for
livelihood creation and income generation. Introduction of Oxo-Biodegration
to reduce harmful impacts of inevitable consumption of plastics. Conducting
Solid waste management awareness for an effective policy retention,
encourages people to manage their waste starting at home, help the local
community livelihood projects by properly segregating waste, and to
contribute to a more effective and productive workforce unity. Three (3)
different projects with different environmental rates of return, profitability,
input in requirements of capital, skill and knowledge. We acknowledge the
limitations of our proposal. Nevertheless, our project offers a practical
insights of utilizing waste, thus we can have further research and progress
and/or improvement in a wider range of waste livelihood that can develop
knowledge and skills through a program of educational service.
