Hot Topic Presentation – Gifted and Talented Programs

5-point List of Useful Information

1. The term gifted and talented children means children and youth who are identified at
preschool, elementary, or secondary level as possessing demonstrated or potential
abilities that give evidence of high performance capability in different areas... and
thereof, require services or activities not ordinarily provided by the school.

2. Twice exceptional students are students who have high cognitive abilities or distinctive
talents, but also have a disability that affects their ability to express those abilities
(Baldwin, Omdal, & Pereles (2015)

3. Before, giftedness was only evaluated through intelligence scores on tests, now the focus
has shifted to alternative assessments that provide a different approach to identifying
students who are gifted and talented, taking in account that there are different types of
intelligence.
4. Different types of Gifted and Talented Programs include:
Differentiated Instruction
Cluster Grouping
After School Enrichment Clubs
Grade and Subject Acceleration
Summer Centers and Camps
Advanced Placement Courses
High School Honors Courses

5. Gifted and Talented programs are important because a curriculum designed especially for
the gifted student provides the best opportunity to grow his or her talents. Appropriate
courses and projects that fit individual student interests allow a high level of commitment
and achievement.
