True Solutions, Colloids, and Suspensions

The document describes an experiment to prepare and distinguish between true solutions, colloids, and suspensions. Students are instructed to make a true solution of salt, sugar, and alum by dissolving each in water, a suspension of soil, chalk, and sand by mixing each with water, and a colloidal solution of starch in water. Key properties - transparency, filtration, and stability - are then used to differentiate the three states and are recorded in an observation table. The conclusion is that true solutions are homogeneous, transparent, and pass through filters while suspensions are heterogeneous, opaque, and do not pass through filters.

ZEBAR SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN

Class: IX Science Laboratory

Objective Experiment 2 : Solution, Colloid and Suspension
Name: _______________________ Div: ____ Roll No: ____ Date:________
_______________________________________________________-_-
To Prepare :
A. a true solution of common salt, sugar and alum.
B. a suspension of soil, chalk powder and fine sand in water.
C. a colloidal solution of starch in water and to distinguish between these on
the basis of :
(1) Transparency (2) filtration criterion (3) stability

Requirements: Ten glass test tubes, a test tube rack, a china dish, a tripod
stand, a glass rod, three funnels, filter papers, a small torch or flashlight.

Chemicals Required : dry common salt , sugar crystals, alum, chalk powder ,
garden soil, egg albumin , fine sand and distilled water.

Procedure :
A . To prepare true solutions of dry common salt, sugar and alum.

Take a pinch of dry common salt, sugar and alum powder in different test tubes.
Pour about 10 cc of distilled water in each test tubes. One by one shake the
contents of the test tubes vigorously by placing your thumb on the mouth of the
test tube. The common salt , sugar and alum powder dissolve completely to
form a true solution.

B. To prepare a suspensions of soil, chalk powder and fine sand in water.

Take a pinch of soil, chalk powder and fine sand in different test tubes. Pour
about 10 cc of distilled water in each test tubes. One by one shake the contents
of the test tubes vigorously by placing your thumb on the mouth of the test tube.
The soil, chalk powder and fine sand do not dissolve in water, but get suspended
in water, so as to form a suspension.

C. To prepare colloidal solution of starch in water.

Take about 1g of starch (maida) in a china dish. Pour about 20 cc of distilled

water in the china dish. Stir the contents in the china dish with a glass rod till a
milky suspension is formed. By placing it on the tripod stand give some heat to
it. Allow the contents to cool. The product so formed is the colloidal solution of
starch in water.

Conclusion : True solutions are homogeneous, transparent, stable and cannot be

filtered by filter paper. Colloidal solution are appeared to be homogeneous but
heterogeneous, translucent, stable and cannot be filtered by filter paper .
Suspensions are heterogeneous, opaque, unstable and can be filtered by filter
paper.

Precautions :
1. Glass rod must be cleaned properly before use.
2. Do not waste the chemicals and distilled water. Use it wisely.
