Blended Learning Lesson Plan
Lesson Title:
The Life of Water
Objectives:
Students will be able to explain describe each step of the water cycle.
Students will be able to illustrate how the water changes as it moves between the
atmosphere and the Earth’s surface during each phase.
State Standards:
Standard 4.E.2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the water cycle and
weather and climate patterns.
Context:
Before learning about the water cycle, students studied the Earth’s atmosphere and its
different mixtures of gases, such as water, vapor, and gas. They will have prior knowledge that
the movement of water is found almost everywhere on the Earth. They will understand the parts
of the water cycle as well as the purpose of each step. After this lesson students will learn about
weather maps and describe weather conditions. I am teaching the water cycle because this will
benefit them for the next lesson when talking about other weather patterns instead of just rain.
Data:
Students will be in groups of 3’s or 4’s depending on their previous class exit ticket data.
They will be grouped in heterogeneous groups so that the less advanced students can learn from
the more advanced students. Depending on their exit ticket Kahoot score for this lesson, will
determine their grouping for the next lesson.

Procedures:
Introduction (20 minutes):
I will start off the lesson by asking the students if they have ever seen rain or
played in it before. If they reply yes, I will ask them where they think the water
that is falling from the sky while its raining comes from. Then I pull up my
PowerPoint that I prepared for the lesson onto the Smart Board. I will introduce
them to each step of the water cycle; evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and
collection, and talk about each of their special purposes. I will then give each
student a red, yellow, or blue card with their name of it to determine which team
they are on. I will then go over all of the materials we will be using and then ask if
anyone has any questions before we start.
Teacher Directed (15 minutes):
In this part of the lesson we will start by talking about what we learned in the
previous class about water and its different forms. I will handout a paper of a
diagram of the water cycle and students will have to briefly, in their own words,
what they think happens during each stage based on the illustration of the
diagram. After students share what they think then we will watch the YouTube
video called, “The Water Cycle” by The Dr. Bincos show on the Smart Board.
This video explains each part of the water cycle that the students can easily
understand. After the video I will question the students what they learned from
this video and I will also ask them again what happens in each part of the water
cycle.
Collaborative (20 minutes):
In this section the groups will come up with their own examples of each step of
the water cycle. They will explain this to the class by going on the Pic Collage
app and create a picture collage of different items that they could use to create
their own demonstration of each part of the cycle. They will show their own
examples of how condensation, precipitation, evaporation, and collection works.
Every group will share their ideas with the class and then we will discuss every
groups collage and determine if it could actually work or not.
Independent Digital (20 minutes):
During this portion of the lessen the students will watch another video to review.
The students will use their iPads and play the interactive game Turtle Diary.
Before starting the game, the students will have to watch the short video about the
water cycle that the app provides, as it will help them with the following games.
They have three different games under The Water Cycle lesson so the students
can choose which one they would like to play for about 10 minutes. During these
games’ students will have to earn points depending on the game, and they will
then have to answer and series of questions if they do not reach the objective of
the game.
Closure (15 minutes):
At the end of the lesson all of the students will play a game of Kahoot on their
individual iPads. The students who come in first, second, and third place will
receive a prize from the class treasure box. This Kahoot game will also determine
which students understood the lesson better than others and I will take this
information to help me determine groups for the next class.
Rationale:
Water Cycle PowerPoint Lesson:
This PowerPoint that I would make for my students will provide easy to
understand content such as pictures, examples, gifs, and definitions. This will
provide an explanation of each of the parts of the water cycle and their purpose.
There will also be interactive games included in this PowerPoint such as them
having to move labels in the corresponding part of the cycle. I will make a
crossword puzzle game as well using vocabulary words that were highlighted in
the previous PowerPoint lesson. This provides the teacher with feedback if the
students understand the content or not and can give them an idea of what
questions that student may have. This type of multimedia instruction best fits
students who learn best through visuals. The large Smart Board is a large surface
for the kids to view and immediately grabs their attention when turned on.
The Water Cycle video:
This video is made by an accredited company that many teachers, and students are
aware of. This video uses characters that the students find intriguing and “funny
looking” so the students are immediately entertained. This video teaches them
what each part of the water cycle is and their purpose. The voice of the character
is very easy and clear to understand for students who have a hard time
understanding words and phrases. Also, the closed captions could be used during
this video for kids who have hearing problems.
Pic Collage app:
This app can be downloaded on to any electronic device and is very easy to use
for any age. This app is a great app to get visual ideas on anything you are
working on. It is free and has good quality photos that you can get from the
internet to use for your collage. This hands-on tool gives the students an
opportunity to show their creativity to the classroom. For students who have
motor skill difficulties, a stylist for the iPad is very helpful.
Turtle Diary:
The Water Cycle is not only an instructional video, but it is also an interactive
game. This gives the students another chance to watch an educational video
following with a hands-on learning game. For the video and games to be free, it
is pretty good quality. These games can be played using an iPad or computer.
Kahoot Game:
Kahoot is a very well-known game in the education world. This is a great way to
quiz your students especially since you can make your own quiz or use previous
ones that the site provides. It helps the teacher know with kids need more help
and which kids understand the content well. This game is of a competitive nature
which the students engage in more and gets them motivated to learn the content.
