does not affect the sum.
The Associative Property of Addition
- states that changing the grouping of the addends does
not affect the sum.
The Identity or Zero Property of Addition
- adding zero to a number does not change the number.
MODELLING:

a. = What
addition
sentence can you give for the first picture? 5 + 3 = 8
second picture? 3 + 5 = 8
b. What do you notice about the position of the addends?
The addends change is order or position Did the
addends change? the sum doesn’t change
c. What is the sum of 5 and 3? 8 3and 5? 8
d. What can you say about the sum? Are they equal? The sum
of the two is the same Why? It is the position or order are
