1COURSE OUTLINE FOR POLIS 201 COURSE (for Fall Semester 2020)

1. Rationale for course:

Non-government organizations (NGOs), churches and development agencies worldwide are
facing growing challenges to an effective service and ministry in the communities they serve.
While many university courses in international development studies examine theories and
concepts related to economic, political and socio-cultural factors affecting community and
national development; there is a need to provide principles and practical tools that a community
and its leaders can use to effectively address the complex forces affecting their level of poverty,
their vulnerability to disasters and their systemic injustices. Overall, this course intends to help
participants to become more effective community development interventionists and leaders.

2. Calendar description:
This course develops a basic level of core leadership and project management competencies for
guiding social entrepreneurs to achieve sustainable community development. Classes focus on
the community development cycle and principles; analyzing the role of worldview, leadership
and global partnerships in a community’s development; and identifying common issues and
resources related to food security and agriculture, health and HIV/AIDS, disaster risk
management, justice in gender and environment, and local community organization /
governance.

Course format:

Lectures to be given using visual material including power-point presentations and videos. To ensure
remote students can also join, the sessions will be available by zoom and/or recorded. Various experts
will be invited to provide insight on some topics. Practical learning will be encouraged through
discussions, debates, group exercises and case studies. Project will require research and connecting
with practitioners.
