For Educators
One-pagers are becoming increasingly popular as a way to help students process what they
have read in one powerful ac9vity. Like sketch notes, they combine visuals with text to make
ideas come alive in students’ minds and memories.
But it’s easy for students to struggle with one-pagers if they are not naturally inclined toward
art and have not previously been encouraged to represent their ideas this way. They may feel
they are being graded unfairly on their ar9s9c abili9es.
That’s why in this packet you will find very specific one-pager templates to use with Ted
Talks. Simply photocopy the template you wish to use with the direc9ons on the back, and
students will have clear direc9ons for how to be successful with this ac9vity.
AEer your students have completed a one-pager using the template several 9mes, they may
feel ready to do them with a freer form. You could always give students the op9on to go
without the template, leGng those who feel more comfortable with the guidance s9ck to the
template.
I hope you enjoy this ac9vity with your students. The final products will make a great display!
Responding to Ted: One-Pager Directions
A one pager is a way to visually share key ideas and information
from what you have learned. When you create a one pager, you
are trying to use both visual symbols and important words to
clearly and concisely share your most important takeaways with
someone else.
For this one pager, I’ve provided you with a template.
Here’s what it MUST INCLUDE:
• The speaker’s name and the subject of the speech in the
center
• Two important quotations from the speech in the top and
bottom rectangles
• In the top half, share what you feel is the biggest idea from
the speech, the main argument the speaker is putting
forward. Use the combination of words, images, symbols,
doodles, sketches, and quotations that you think is best.
• In the bottom half, make connections between this talk and
the world. This could include connections to your own life, to
other talks you’ve heard or films you’ve seen, podcasts you’ve
listened to or books you’ve read, pop culture, history, etc. Use
a combination of words, images, symbols, doodles, sketches,
etc. to share these connections.
You may also add other symbols, drawings, and words that
represent the reading as you wish.

• The speaker’s name and the subject of the speech in the
center, plus how many stars you would give the speech and
why
• Two important themes from the speech in the top and
bottom rectangles
• In the top half, share the three most important quotations
from the speech, illuminating them with some combination
of sketches, symbols, drawings and lettering.
• In the bottom half, respond to the Ted Talk. Using a
combination of words, quotes, drawings, and symbols, share
your opinions about the talk, connect its big ideas with big
ideas of your own, and explain why you do or don’t think it’s
an important message for the world.
You may also add other symbols, drawings, and words that
represent the reading as you wish.
