Understanding Generation Z Traits

Generation Z, born after 2000, has been exposed to widespread internet use from a young age. They can process information and multi-task quickly but also get bored easily. They are entrepreneurial, value individuality, and prefer to learn on their own using technology rather than traditional education. Their communication is strictly technology-based using popular apps. Three major generations - Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Millennials - differ in their work ethics, relationships, and irritations. Baby Boomers are hard working and selfish. Generation X is balanced but loners. Millennials are focused and inclusive but prone to promiscuity. Slang terms help establish generational identities and communication gaps between young and old

Generation Z / Centennials (Born after 2000)

This generation has been exposed to the widespread use of the internet from an early age. They have the ability to
process information very quickly and, as a result, tend to be less focused and bore quickly. They can multi-task
easily and like to balance work and play at the same time. They are global thinkers, very entrepreneurial and place a
high importance on individuality. They are more demanding than Millennials, and less focused on traditional
education, preferring to use the technology they have grown up to learn on their own. Their communication style is
strictly technology based and largely conducted using popular apps. Even texting and Facebook are a thing of the
past for this generation.

Reason for Generation Gap

Slang

Slang is an ever-changing set of colloquial words and phrases that speakers use to establish or reinforce social
identity or cohesiveness within a group or with a trend in society at large. As each successive generation of society
struggles to establish its own unique identity among its predecessors it can be determined that generational gaps
provide a large influence over the continual change and adaptation of slang. As slang is often regarded as an
ephemeral dialect, a constant supply of new words is required to meet the demands of the rapid change in
characteristics. And while most slang terms maintain a fairly brief duration of popularity, slang provides a quick and
readily available vernacular screen to establish and maintain generational gaps in a societal context.
Effect of Technology

Every generation develops new slang, but with the development of technology, understanding gaps have widened
between the older and younger generations. The term communication skills, for example, might mean formal writing
and speaking abilities to an older worker. But it might mean e-mail and instant-messenger to a twenty something.
People often have private conversations in secret in a crowded room in today's age due to the advances of mobile
phones and text messaging. Among "texters" a form of slang or texting lingo has developed, often keeping those not
as tech savvy out of the loop. Children increasingly rely on personal technological devices like cell phones to define
themselves and create social circles apart from their families, changing the way they communicate with their
parents. Cell phones, instant messaging, e-mail and the like have encouraged younger users to create their own
inventive, quirky and very private written language. That has given them the opportunity to essentially hide in plain
sight. They are more connected than ever, but also far more independent.
Different Perceptions of Relationship

It is evident that parents and their teenage children may evaluate their relationship with each other in different ways.
Through some studies we may be able to account for the reasons behind this. It’s indicated that there is a high
degree of disagreement on how parents and their children view their relationship. It was observed that parents
usually reported better relationship quality whereas the children reported better contact and exchanges of assistance,
but not as positive relationship quality as stated by their parents. The variables found to influence the
correspondence between the two generations were age, child’s marital status, gender and residential
proximity. It is known that familial relationships between a parent and a child is amongst the most important
relations and is a major contributor to the emotional and psychological well-being of both generations.
Associated with different assistance between both the generations. A study suggested that though there is agreement
on certain aspects between different generations but parents are likely to perceive their relations with their children
positively.
