Lesson 1 – Orchard Farming
What I Need to Know
This will give you an idea of the skills or competencies you are expected to
learn in the module.
Do you plan to plant trees and fruit trees in your backyard? In front of
your house? In your garden? In your vacant lot? More so when you decide to
have an orchard. Orchard is an area of land where fruit trees are grown for
either for family consumption or income generating reasons. Either way, these
are only few of the many reasons why we need to know the technicalities
involving orchard farming and everything related to the later.
Nowadays, planting fruit-bearing trees that yields are a profitable
business if one puts his/her full attention, and has technical knowledge and
skill in planting, coupled with hard work and determination.
With this perspective, farmers who own a big piece of land have an
alternative way of earning while helping the environment and the
community/people as well. The introduction of orchard farming boosts not
only businessmen but families in the first place because of the benefits
mentioned earlier. The successful orchard farmers help the community in
terms of producing locally grown fruits for local and international
consumption.
This lesson is designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you understand on Agriculture – Orchard Farming. The scope of this module
permits it’s to be used in many different learning situations. The language
used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are
arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
Content Standards:
A. demonstrate an understanding of scientific practices in planting
trees and fruit trees.
Performance Standards:
A. applies knowledge and skills in planting trees and fruit trees.
Learning Competency:
1. Define Orchard Farming.
2. Illustrate the different methods of arranging in the orchard.
3. Identify famous successful orchard farms and farmers in the country.

Some Successful and Famous Orchard Growers in the
Community.
1. Gil T. David Mango Orchard.
Gil is a retired officer of the Philippine Army. The son of a farmer in the
Barrio of San Isidro, Bacolor Pampanga, he has loved the farm his father
tended for the family.
In five to seven years’ time after applying the scientific approach to
farming-from the choice of seedlings, the right use of compost and proper and
proper control of pests and diseases, the mango orchard bloomed and bore
good quality mangoes ready for harvest. Today, Gil’s mango orchard is one of
the most prosperous mango orchards in the barrio.
2. Ben N. Santos Jackfruit Orchard.
Ben became an orphan at a young age of 12. He and his two sisters
were adopted by his mother’s unmarried brother, his Uncle Jose who owned
a jackfruit farm in Bataan.
The jackfruit orchard has been a profitable business for over a decade
now. After the death of his uncle, Ben and his sisters took over the
management of the farm.
3. Jose Mercado (Merlo Agricultural Corporation)
He is one of the successful orchard growers in Luzon. He grows and
sells coffee beans for three brands of coffee popular in the market: Batangas
Brew, Cafe de Lipa and Kapeng Barako.
4. Edith Dacuycuy (Refmad Farms)
She owns the largest dragon fruit farm in the Philippines, located in
Ilocos Norte. She distributes dragon fruit here in the country and also abroad.
She also utilizes zero-waste farming practices.
5. Philip Cruz (Herbanext)
He owns one of the largest local sources of herbal extra in the
Philippines, and is now exporting herbal extracts in other countries. With
that, he is also among the list of famous orchard growers in the Philippines.
TLE 7/8 Exploratory - Carpentry 3 DepED-Division of Lapu-Lapu City
6. Paris Uy (Live Green International)
He produces organic vegetables, and is now distributing fresh organic
products across 18 outlets of famous malls and establishments in the
country.
7. Senen Bacani (La Fuerta, Inc.)
He is one of the famous orchard growers in the Philippines. He owns
vast lands of banana plantation. He produces five to six million boxes of
Cavendish bananas and exports these to Middle East and other countries in
Asia.
Methods of Planting
1. Direct planting is a method of planting
where the seeds or plants are directly
planted in the soil where they will
germinate or grow.
2. Indirect planting. In indirect planting, the plant
needs to be transferred to its permanent place. This is
commonly done with trees. Nowadays, you can avail
seedlings planted in small plastic bags ready for
transfer.
Methods of Transferring Plants
The following are different method s of transferring plants:
Dibbling method - This method is appropriate for
plants with small like roots. The shovel is pushed into
the soil under the roots then gently pushed upwards.
TLE 7/8 Exploratory - Carpentry 4 DepED-Division of Lapu-Lapu City
Cone –shaped Method - A deep and wide cone-
shaped hole is made using the topsoil. Best for plant
with small roots.
Stit method - A deep hole is dug with enough space
from the roots
Side of the hole Method - Dig a hole that is deep
but narrow. Good for plant with roots that are long
and spread in one direction
Whole digging method - Dig a hole that is deeper
and wider using the spade and pick axe.
General Methods of Arranging Trees in an Orchard.
The following are the general methods of arranging tress in an orchard:
1. Square system
In this case a tree is planted on each corner of a square whatever may
be planting distance. This plant commonly followed as it is easy to layout,
inter cropping and cultivation is visible in two direction. E.g. Mango, banana,
and citrus crop.
TLE 7/8 Exploratory - Carpentry 5 DepED-Division of Lapu-Lapu City
2. Rectangular system
This system is similarly of the square system in its layout except in this
layout row to row and crop to plant spacing is not same. E.g. grape (3m x 2m)
2m
3m
3. Hexagonal System
In this method the trees are planted each corner of equilateral
triangular. This way six tress from ber with the seventh tree in the
center. The trees are equally spaced from each other. In this system
inter cultivation is difficult.
4. Triangular System
In this system the are planted as in the square system but the
plants in the 2nd, 4th, 6th and other alternate rows. These systems have
no special advantages over the square system except more spaces for
the trees and intercrops. It is difficult for layout cultivation.
TLE 7/8 Exploratory - Carpentry 6 DepED-Division of Lapu-Lapu City
5. Diagonal or Quincunx
It is differing from some system by planting and additional tree in
the center of each other of plant of trees. The central tree is usually the
filler tree which only for a shorter period. In this layout population
becomes double than square system of mango + papaya, mango + fruits
6. Contour System
It is only followed on hills with high slopes. I. this case the tree
rows are planted along a uniform slope and usually at right angle to
the slope with the idea of reducing loss of top soil due to soil erosion.
What I Have Learned
This includes questions or blank sentence/paragraph to be filled in to
process what you learned from the lesson.
Let’s Remember:
Orchard Farming is a kind of faming where lands are used to grow,
trees and fruit-bearing trees.
There two ways of transferring plant: the direct planting and indirect
planting.
TLE 7/8 Exploratory - Carpentry 7 DepED-Division of Lapu-Lapu City
Trees plays a vital role to every family and the community in general for
the products and comforts they give; Fruit-bearing trees are source of
vitamins and minerals and an opportunity to earn money too.
There are famous orchards farms in the country; Senen Bacani (La
Fuerta, Inc.), Paris Uy (Live Green International), Edith Dacuycuy
(Refmad Farms), Gil T. David mango Orchard Farm.
There are different ways of transferring plants: Dibbling method, slit
method, cone-shaped method, side of the hole, and whole digging
method.
There are general arrangements of orchard farm: the square system,
the rctangular system, the triangular system, the hexagonal,
The diagonal or the quincunx system and thee contour systems
plants regularly.
Trees are sources income too. They are sources of food, lumber, fiber
for paper, fuel for cooking, and chemicals like resin and turpentine.
