Bubt STA231 Mid Term Question Summer 2021

This document contains instructions and questions for a midterm statistics exam for a Bangladesh university. [1] It includes three sections with multiple choice and free response questions assessing students' knowledge of measures of central tendency and dispersion, descriptive statistics like histograms and stem-and-leaf plots, and correlation and regression. [2] Students are asked to calculate values like means, standard deviations, percentiles, and correlation coefficients for various data sets. [3] They are also asked to interpret results, draw graphs, find regression lines and estimate values.

Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Program: B.Sc. Engineering in CSE, Shift: Day
Intake: 43rd, Section-02
Course Title: Statistics
Course Code: STA 231

Midterm Examination Fall: 2020-21 Total Marks : 30 Time: 6 hrs

Course Instructor: Md. Shahidul Islam (SHI)

Instructions:
 Answer all the questions.
 The number in the square bracket at the right-hand side indicates the full marks.
 Please attach your answer script in pdf format in Google classroom.

CO1 1. a) What do you mean by measures of central tendency and dispersion? Describe the situation
where the mode is appropriate than the median. [3]
b) A manufacturer of electronic components is interested in determining the lifetime of a
certain type of battery. A sample (in hours of life) is given as follows:
107 125 21 115 126 270 117 110 121 129

i. Compute the five-number summary and construct a box-plot. [1.5]

ii. Calculate the inter-quartile range and identify the outliers if exist. [1.5]
c) The numbers of blocked intrusion attempts on each day during the first 10 days of the
month were as follows:
32 39 66 50 43 47 59 56 45 51

i. Find the mean and standard deviation of the numbers of blocked intrusion attempts
on each day. [2]
ii. Calculate D7 and P85 from the above data. Where, D = Deciles and P = Percentiles. [2]

CO1 2. a) Explain the concept of statistics in computer science and engineering. How do you
compare the discrete and continuous variables? [3]
b) The following data represent the length of life (in seconds) of 30 fruit flies subject to a new
spray in a controlled laboratory experiment:

i. Construct a stem and leaf plot for the life span of the fruit flies and comment on the
result. [3]
ii. Construct a frequency distribution for the above data. Also draw a cumulative
frequency curve and histogram for the constructed frequency distribution. [4]

CO2 3. a) Discuss different types of correlation with scatter diagrams. What do you mean by
regression equation? [3]
b) In a certain type of metal test specimen, the normal stress on a specimen is known to be
functionally related to the shear resistance. The following is a set of coded experimental
data on the two variables:
normal stress (X) 26.8 25.4 28.9 23.6 27.7 23.9 24.7 28.1 26.9

shear resistance (Y) 26.5 27.3 24.2 27.1 23.6 25.9 26.3 22.5 21.7

i. Calculate the correlation coefficient between X and Y. Also comment on the result. [3]
ii. Estimate the regression line of shear resistance on normal stress. [3]
iii. Estimate the shear resistance for a normal stress of 24.5. [1]
