Trees Course of Nature

Each day the sun rises I feel a tingling sensation on my arms. I get blinded by the

light from up above. The sunlight provides food for my leaves to grow. Most days run the

same, I will feel a slight breeze, lose a couple of leaves and patiently wait for the sun to

sink down on the horizon. The worst day was in the spring when the clouds gave me a

cold hard shower. Even though I despised that day, it provided me with a drink. On that

day, the wind tried to knock me over. I got slammed with water from all angles. It made

me sway every which way, so I shivered with fright. I implanted my roots even stronger

to hold my ground. My roots go way down in the ground and spread out far. One day I

came close to losing my balance and toppling over. I’ve lost a few of my limbs before

when the sky was upset like this. Each season provides me with different obstacles and

beauties.

In the spring, I take my time to grow my leaves to become bright green.

Eventually, they will start changing colors. This is the time of year the streets below will

get busier. People come out of their homes from the cold winter. In the fall, the winds

take away my colorful leaves from me. When the wind takes my leaves, they fall down or

fly away. They will disintegrate right beneath me. Sometimes we have to let go of things

in life. What hurts me the most is when I watch my buddies get struck by bolts of

lightning from the sky. I tremble at the thought of lighting reaching my branches. Last

time the sky was upset, my buddy across the street got struck. The next day, the humans

took him away and I never saw him again. In all my years I had never felt so hurt. They

are always changing the landscape in our neighborhood. During the summer, some days

when the air outside is hot, I will help lower the temperature with my branches. I like to

provide shade for houses and cars. The humans like to use me to protect themselves from

the sun. During the winter, the roads were slick with frozen water. White fluffy snow had

fallen from the sky all morning long. Due to this I got my trunk ran into by a car driving

down my street. My trunk is the strongest part of me, so I held my ground. I am strong

and always make it through whatever the seasons bring. My surroundings are always

changing each season and I just have to adjust.

I am older than everyone else in my neighborhood and therefore, wiser and

bigger. I grow two rings each year to show my age. I feel myself getting wider as time

passes. I am a male but some of my friends are female. I have many complex things

going on inside of my roots, trunk and branches. I release oxygen for animals and

humans to breathe. Every day I will allow animals to live in my trunk or on my branches.

I strive to be generous in this way. Although I’m not sure I have an option in this matter.

I’ve seen all sorts of creatures from way up here. I’ve seen small animals with big tails,

ones with little tails and tons of insects. They are all welcome to take shelter under my

branches. Sometimes, I use my bark as a barrier between me and the outside world. Then

I remember to be brave and step out of my comfort zone. I would prefer not to be cut

down and used for other things. Although if this were to happen, I would proudly provide

for those who needed me. Each of us feels this way about being used for other things.

Most days the sun goes down around the same time. I will sit patiently and calmly under

the dark sky until it rises again.
