Course Title: Theoretical Foundations of Nursing
Course Credits: 3 units
Contact Hours/week: 54 hours

Course Description:
This theoretical course deals with the meta concepts of a person, health, environment and
nursing as viewed by the different theories. It includes non-nursing theories such as systems,
developmental and change theories. It presents how these concepts and theories serve as guide
to nursing practice. It further deals with health as a multi-factorial phenomenon and the
necessary care competencies that the nurse aims to develop.
Course Outcomes:
At the end of the semester, the students are expected to:
1. discuss concepts and terms related to theoretical foundations of nursing practice,
2. differentiate views given by various nursing theories on person, health, environment
and nursing,
3. describe the various non-nursing theories as applied to nursing.
4. utilize selected nursing theory and non-nursing theories in the care of clients.
5. demonstrate selected competencies/learning outcomes under the eleven key areas of
responsibilities pertinent to nursing, and
6. relate effectively with clients and members of the health team in work situations
related to these core values of nursing.

REQUIREMENTS:
All students are responsible for checking their University email account regularly (daily or
several times every week) to obtain Official University Communication regarding their
courses, program and student status. Students work closely with their subject teacher to
monitor the learner's progress in meeting the challenges of online learning.
Periodical examinations, quizzes, assignments and projects and other related learning tasks. A
rubric will be used to determine the students' performance of the learning tasks
online. Students are expected to submit written work on the scheduled date and time.
Due dates for the practice exams are identified on the course calendar displayed in CANVAS.
Consistent with the “Written Work” section of this syllabus, students are expected to submit
work by the scheduled date and time.
Additionally, students are expected to take examinations at the scheduled time unless there are
inevitable circumstances. Failure to complete the practice exams within the timed structure is
reported as "Incomplete."
Each student is responsible for making sure that he or she has completed the written work
prior to submission.
Students with good internet connection may submit earlier than the scheduled date.
Flexibility, utmost consideration and best efforts shall be extended by teachers to
students with no or slow internet connection.
Enhancement Activities -The learners are expected to conduct outcome based learning
activities of the different nursing theories that will showcase development of their scientific
and professional foundation to nursing knowledge with the aim to mold future nurses in
providing quality, ethical and humane patient care. Moreover, to practice nursing with
meaning.
