Los Angeles Abrasion Test Report

This report summarizes the results of a Los Angeles abrasion test conducted to determine the durability of a coarse aggregate sample. The test followed ASTM procedures using a Los Angeles abrasion machine, sieves, a balance, and oven. The initial sample weighed 5000 grams and after 500 revolutions in the machine, 4150 grams were retained above a 1.7mm sieve. This resulted in an abrasion percentage of 17%, which is below the 30% limit for use in asphalt pavement. Therefore, the sample aggregate was deemed suitable for this application based on its resistance to degradation.

A REPORT ABOUT

Los-Angeles Abrasion Test.

Student Name: Esmat Othman ali

No. of Test: “ 7 “

Date: 28-10-2017 Group: B

Code Name:
scope:-
This test method cover testing sizes of coarse aggregates for
resistance to absorption using the Los Angeles testing machine.
Principle Apparatus:-

1-Los Angeles machine.

2-Sieves.

3-Balance.

4-Oven.
5-Container.

6-Charge 400gm.

7-Aggregate.
Specification:-
ASTM Specifications C33-86 requires that the abrasion percent
should not exceed 50% for coarse aggregate used in concrete mixes.
ASTM Specifications requires that the abrasion percent should not
exceed 30% for coarse aggregate used in surfacing layers of the
roads.

Number Weight
Grading
Of Spheres Of Charge (gm)
A 12 5000±25
B 11 4584±25
C 8 3330±20
D 6 2500±15
Procedure:-
1-Put the sample of coarse aggregate in an oven at 105OC to get
oven-dry sample.
2-Prepare the sample then weigh and record its weight to the
nearest 1gm.
3-Place the test sample and charge in the Los Angeles testing
machine and rotate the machine at 30 to 33 round/min for 500
revolutions.
4-Discharge the material from the machine and make preliminary
separation of the sample a sieve coarser then (1.7mm) the finer
portion shall then be sieved on a 1.7mm sieve.
5-The material coarser then the 1.7mm sieve shall be washed oven
dried at 105OC to the nearest 5gm.
Calculation & Results:-

The Abrasion is (17%) and it is less than 30% it means we can used for asphalt
pavement.

Weigh Of Initial Sample 5000
Abrasion% 18.5%
Discussion:-
Los Angeles Abrasion measure the resistance of coarse
aggregate to degradation (breakdown) by impact, abrasion and
grinding. The number of spheres depending upon the grading of the
test sample, the weight of the aggregate. According to the ASTM
Specifications C33-86 requires that the abrasion percent should not
exceed 50% for coarse aggregate used in concrete mixes. According
to the ASTM Specifications requires that the abrasion percent
should not exceed 30% for coarse aggregate used in surfacing layers
of the roads. In the Los-Angeles test we use sieve no 12 (1.7mm). In
The Los-Angeles test the dram have 500 revolution, 30 to 33
round/min. To find the strength of aggregate we will check three
tests (Crushing value test, Impact value test and Los-Angeles
abrasion test). Aggregate has greater strength than concrete
because aggregates is given some of his strength to the concrete,
aggregate strength is between 80-100 Mpa but concrete strength is
between 20-50 Mpa. The specification of the impact value test for
gravel used in the surface layer of roads it should have a hummer
have a high from the sample 38cm and the hammer weight should
be 14kg. The specification of the impact value test for gravel used in
the surface layer of roads must be ≤ 30%. The specification of the
impact value test for gravel used in the concrete must be ≤ 45%.
