Lesson Plan 2
GRADE 8th Grade
SUBJECT 8Th Grade Math
Students will begin class with a warmup reviewing solving for a single variable equations.
Warm up: Solve for x
-4 = 2x + 6 -14 = 3x – 2
4x-3 = 2x + 7 4x -2 -x = 5x + 10
We will review how to isolate a variable in order to solve for an equation. This warmup will lead
LESSON SUMMARY into our lesson on solving systems of linear equations through substitution. Students will learn
how to isolate one variable in an equation with two variables in order to substitute it into the
second equation.
Students will take notes as we go through the new lesson, and work on problems as a class in
guided practice. We will then move into independent practice where students will work on
problems posted in a google slide. I will create a slide at the end of their google slide deck that
will be considered their exit ticket and a formative assessment to see how they did with the
concepts in this lesson.
Students will be assigned homework for additional practice, and anything they do not finish in
class will be considered homework.
We will use constructivism in this lesson. Students are taking from knowledge that they already
know about solving system of equations through graphing. They know one method to solve a

used to accomplish the same thing. I will use a warm up as a means of blending these two
ideas together and showing how they build on top of one another and are connected.
ISTE Standards for Students How will you address the ISTE Standards for Students?
Standard 1: Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity will be addressed during this lesson. I will inspire students to
learn new concepts that they will be able to apply to solving equations. I will inspire learning through engaging with my
students and asking them questions throughout the lesson.
STATE or COMMON CORE How will you address your States or the Common Core standards?
[Link].C.7.B
Solve linear equations with rational number coefficients, including equations whose solutions require expanding expressions
using the distributive property and collecting like terms.
[Link].C.8
Analyze and solve pairs of simultaneous linear equations.
MEASURABLE OBJECTIVE What will your students be able to do?
Students will be able to solve a system of equations through isolating a variable and solving using substitutions.
Students will be able to use additive inverse in order to isolate a variable.
Students will be able to use substitution to input the isolated variables solution into the second equation.
Students will be able solve for both x and y through the use of substitutions.
ASSESSMENT
How will you know whether your students have made progress toward the objective?
How and when will you assess mastery?
I will use a formative assessment at the end of class in the form of a google slide where they will answer a couple of
questions so I can see how they are doing with the concept learned in class today. I will be able to see how the class as a
whole is doing, if I need to add in another day of practice with the concepts learned or if they are able to move on to the next
lesson material. If there are just a few students who did not understand the exit ticket, then I will call them into a tutorial period
to work on what they got wrong.
DIVERSE LEARNERS (Mixed Abilities)
1. How will your instruction support the diversity of learners in your classroom?

How will you scaffold practice I will create questions in guided practice that start out very simple such as having
exercises from easy to hard? one equation be x= 4 and another equation being y=2x + 5. Since x is already found
they just need to plug that into the second equation for y. Questions will work
towards being more difficult and having to rearrange equations such as 2x + 4y = 8
where they need to isolate the variable and the divide in order to get a variable by
itself.
How will you monitor and correct I will be calling on students to help me walk through problems. I will be able to get
student performance? an idea of how well the students are comprehending the material.
I will be able to see students’ progress on the google slides deck and see what
students are doing well and getting questions right. The students who have gotten
any questions wrong I will call on to help me walk through a problem together. Any
other students that are struggling can listen in to get a better understanding of the
problem, and students that understand can continue on with their work.

PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS
InTASC What InTASC standards are supported by this lesson?
Standard 4: Content Knowledge is the standard that is supported by this lesson. In order for me to accurately teach the
information from this lesson, I must first fully understand the material and how best to teach it. I must teach the information in
a way that connects to other lessons and flows seamlessly building on top of previous knowledge.
ISTE Standards for Teachers What InTASC standards are supported by this lesson?
The ISTE standard I will be using is Standard 1: Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity. I will inspire students to
grow their knowledge of mathematics by learning new concepts that can be used in their toolbox when solving problems.
TPE’s What TPE’s are supported by this lesson?
TPE 5: Assessing Student Learning is supported in this lesson through an exit ticket. I am using the last google slide the
students work on in class as a formative assessment. This will allow me to see how well the students understood the
concepts that were being taught and if I need to reteach any of the material in the next class. I can gauge how quickly I can
teach or if I need to slow down the material being taught.
LESSON REFLECTION (Pre – and Post – teaching the lesson)
Pre-Teaching Lesson Post-Teaching Lesson (if applicable)
I expect this lesson to go mostly smoothly with a few
bumps in the road as students become comfortable
with the material. This is a new concept for them so I
imagine that it will take them some time to get the
hang of it, and some extra guided practice might be
necessary for initial comprehension of the material.
This lesson is all about practicing what they have
learned and repetition until they feel comfortable with
the material.
