Ingestion Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Do not induce vomiting
unless told by physician. If vomiting occurs ensure patient can breathe. Get
immediate medical attention.

Inhalation IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable
for breathing. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing.

Most Important Symptoms and Effects, Both Acute and Delayed

Most Important Symptoms and Effects The most important known symptoms and effects are described in
labeling see section (2) and/or in section 11

Indication of immediate medical attention and special treatment needed

Notes to physician Remove poison by gastric lavage with water vomiting can be induced by giving 0.2% copper
sulphate solution which act as an emetic and also produce insoluble
cupric phosphide which can be later removed by gastric lavage with 1:5000 potassium
permanganate solution.

Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media Dry chemical, soda ash, lime or sand

Unsuitable extinguishing media Water

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Flash Point Zinc phosphide is not flammable; however, it reacts readily with water to produce phosphine
gas which may spontaneously ignite in air.

Hydrogen phosphide (Phosphine)/air mixtures at concentrations above the lower flammable

limit may ignite spontaneously. Ignition of high concentrations of hydrogen phosphide can
Special Hazard
produce a very energetic reaction. Explosions can occur under these conditions and may
cause personal injury. Never allow the build- up of hydrogen phosphide to exceed explosive
concentrations. Containers of metal phosphides should be opened in open air and never in a
flammable atmosphere. Do not confine spent or partially spent dust from metal phosphide
fumigants as slow release of the hydrogen phosphide from these materials may result in
formation of an explosive atmosphere. Fires containing hydrogen phosphide or metal
phosphides will produce phosphoric acid by the following reaction: 2PH3 + 4O2 = H2O +
P2O5 = 2H3PO4

Hazardous combustion products Phosphorus oxides, Zinc Phosphide, Phosphine gas

Protective equipment and precautions for firefighters

Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit. Use standard firefighting procedures and consider the hazards of
involved material.

6. Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Personal Precautions Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid dust formation. Remove all sources of ignition.
Provide adequate ventilation. Keep unnecessary and unprotected personnel from entering.
Use personal protective equipment.

Environmental precautions Do not flush into surface water or sanitary sewer system. Do not allow material to
Contaminate ground water system. Prevent product from entering drains. Local authorities
Should be advised if significant spillages cannot be contained. See Section 12 for
additional ecological information. Avoid release to the environment. Collect spillage.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Methods for Clean-Up Do not use water at any time during clean-up. Wear gloves when handling magnesium
phosphide. Follow all label instructions regarding spill clean-up and residual disposal
methods. Shovel or sweep up.

Reference to other sections Refer to Section 8 - Exposure Controls/Personal Protection and Section 13 - Disposal
Considerations.

7. Handling and Storage

Precautions for safe handling

Handling Keep out of reach of children. Avoid dust formation. Do not eat, drink or smoke when using
this product. Remove all sources of ignition. Provide appropriate exhaust ventilation where
inhalation exposure is likely. Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not expose to atmospheric
moisture for any time longer than necessary.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Storage Store in cool/well-ventilated place. Keep away from heat and sources of ignition. Do not
store in buildings where humans or domestic animals reside. Keep containers tightly closed
in a cool, well-ventilated place.

incompatible materials Oxidizers, Water - moisture, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, perchloric acid

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection

Exposure Guideline Apply technical measures to comply with the occupational exposure limit.

Engineering controls Ensure adequate ventilation, especially in confined areas. If applicable, use process
enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, or other engineering controls to maintain airborne
levels below recommended exposure limits. If exposure limits have not been established,
maintain airborne levels to an acceptable level.
Personal protective equipment
Eye/Face Protection Avoid contact with eyes. Where there is potential for eye contact have eye flushing
equipment available. Tightly fitting safety goggles. Face-shield.

Skin/Hand protection Wear protective gloves/clothing. Long-sleeved clothing

Respiratory protection When workers are facing concentrations above the exposure limit they must use
appropriate certified respirators.

Environmental exposure Prevent further leakage or spillage if safe to do so. Do not let product enter drains.
controls Discharge into the environment must be avoided. Local authorities should be advised if
significant spillage cannot be contained.

General hygiene considerations

Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Keep away from food, drink and animal feeding stuffs. Wash hands before
breaks and immediately after handling the product. Remove and wash contaminated clothing before re-use.

10. Stability and Reactivity

Reactivity

Reacts with water emitting flammable gases.

Chemical stability

This product is stable to most chemical reactions except for hydrolysis. A component of this product, Zinc phosphide, reacts with
moisture from the air, water, acids and many other liquids to produce toxic and flammable hydrogen phosphine gas. Pure hydrogen
phosphide (phosphine) gas is practically insoluble in water, fats and oils and is stable at normal fumigation temperatures.

Possibility of hazardous reaction

None under normal processing.

Conditions to avoid

Exposure to moisture. Protect from water Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources of ignition.

Incompatible Materials
