  • Letter of Intent: Expresses intentions to pursue a Master's Degree in Physical Land Resources, detailing educational background, professional aspirations, and motivation for applying.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my intention to apply for the Master’s Degree in Physical Land
Resources with main subject Land Resources Engineering. My ultimate goal applying this
programme is to become one of the lecturer in Indonesia focusing at Land Engineering, so I
can teach my skill in earth science and do extensive researches. I am very interest in Land
Engineering like applied geophysics and when I see this programme with VLIR-UOS
scholarship, my best wish is to join in.
I graduated in 2014, from Indonesia Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical College
(STMKG) with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in geophysics programme. The
programme was a continuation program of my previous study in diploma III in geophysics
programme. During my undergraduate study, I gained a lot of skills such as analysing
earthquake parameters, analysing peak ground acceleration, analysing geomagnetic data for
earthquake precursor study using MAGDAS magnetometer (MAGDAS is a collaboration
project between BMKG and Kyushu University), until observing weather parameters. Those
skills has supported me in my work experience as geophysical staff in Indonesia Agency for
Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG). My thesis is about relocating hypocentre
location on slab earthquake under the supervision of Drs. Ibnu Purwana, [Link].
In addition to academic activities, I was actively involved in the extra-curricular activities too. I
was a leader in organization for environmental and adventure activity. I developed my
leadership skill by leading my team in several events such as orientation and organizational
training for freshmen. I also honed my communication skill by representing my college in
Indonesia state college forum in 2010. From those experience, I learnt how to allocate time
and energy for my extra-curricular activities and my academics. I accustomed to do my tasks
with strong focus and hard work.
Soon after graduated from my diploma, l was placed at Geophysical station in Nias Island,
North Sumatra as a geophysicist. Geophysical method is really needed in my work field to
analysing and anticipating many kind of hazards because Indonesia is the laboratory of
disasters. Its position lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire and unstable tectonic area where the
Indo-Australian Plate and the Pacific Plate are pushed under the Eurasian plate. This area is
vulnerable to earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and landslide. Two years of work
experience has helped me develop deeper my skills in geophysics. I practically used my skill
in geophysical observation and analysis as my routine task. In other occasion, I was attended
potential geophysics training that improve my ability to acquiring gravity and magnetic data
and also analysing them.
Furthermore, in February 2015 I have been projected to become lecturer in STMKG by
Secretary General of Indonesia Agency for Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics
(BMKG). I was moved to STMKG from my previous workplace. I use all of my ability that I
have gained from my previous work experience to cooperate with my team in Geophysical
Department at STMKG. I must continue my master’s study in as a requirement for teaching in
this department.
With my background as a geophysicist, I have a desire to develop my knowledge in the field
of land resources engineering. This knowledge will be very useful for the development of
disaster mitigation especially in the earthquake disaster that frequently occur in Indonesia. In
addition, I wanted to develop that knowledge with further research and I will teach my students.
Now, I am seeking the opportunity to pursue my ultimate goal by applying for the Master’s
Degree in Physical Land Resources with main subject Land Resources Engineering. I think
the programme has perfectly match with the field of my experiences. The courses that
combine the strong teaching and field-work practice have convinced me to choose this
programme. I am confident that I can explore my abilities and gain more skills in land resources
engineering by studying at Master of Science Programme in Physical Land Resources. Later
on, skills and research experience in this MSc degree will be very helpful for me to achieve
my purpose to be a land resources engineer expert in BMKG. I believe that my opportunity to
study at this world class University can help me broaden my perception about international
society.
Thank you for considering my application and I looking forward to your positive reply.

Best regards,

Sandy Tri Gustono
