Developmental Lesson Plan
Teacher Candidate: Lauren Kovacs Date: March 30, 2021
Group Size: 25 Allotted Time: 60 minutes Grade Level: 3rd grade
Subject or Topic: Lesson Plan 3- Water
Common Core/PA Standard(s):
● Standard - 4.5.3.A
Identify resources humans take from the environment for their survival.
● Standard - 3.4.3.D2
Observe, analyze and document how simple systems work.
Learning Targets/Objectives:
● The third grade students will be able to explain how the water cycle creates new fresh
water.
● The third grade student will be able to explain and model the steps of the water cycle.
Assessment Approaches: Evidence:
1) water cycle foldable 1)observational
2)bulletin board activity 2)observational
3)color drops paper 3)observational
4)mini water cycle 4)created model of water cycle
5)Kahoot game 5)running record
Assessment Scale:
4) >5 labels in correct spot/ >3 pictures in correct space - proficient
<5 labels in correct spot / <3 pictures in correct spot - below basic
5) 8/10 - proficient
<7 - below basic
Subject Matter/Content:
water
Prerequisites:
● fill in notes
● fine motor skills
● group work
● used kahoot
● made a model before
● make predictions
● basic knowledge of water
Key Vocabulary:
● Evaporation- water changes from liquid to a gas due to sun heat.
● Precipitation- water droplets fall (rain/ ice)
● Condensation- changes from a gas to a liquid forming clouds/water droplets
● Surface runoff-
● Conserve- use wisely, not wastefully
● Water Cycle- movement of water from place to place and from one form to another
form.
● Salt water- water with salt
● Fresh water- water ready to drink
Content/Facts:
● What is water
● What is the water cycle
-precipitation
-condensation
-evaporation
● Precipitation
-rain drops/ice when water droplets gets heavy
● Evaporation
-water heated by sun and turns to gas
● Condensation
-water vapor turns back into droplets and form clouds
● Freshwater vs Ocean water
-ready to drink
-contains salt
-out of 100 cups, 1 is fresh water liquid, 2 fresh water frozen, 98 salt water
● Water recycles naturally
-freshwater falls that we are able to consume
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies:
-To get students excited about water, ask them to ponder what they would do if they didn’t
have access to fresh water. What would be difficult to do?
-Allow 2 minutes to think but don’t share
-Mention how there is a limited amount of freshwater available on Earth but luckily it
replenishes itself such as when it rains
-It rains due to the water cycle which is always happening
-Have them listen to the water song
https://youtu.be/Oq8iCsV4woE
-Ask students to pair share the 3 steps of the water cycle and call on students to answer
Development/Teaching Approaches
1.
-We are going to start today off by making a foldable together throughout the lesson
-Start with a piece of paper and fold all 4 corners in towards the middle
-There will be 4 flaps
-Runoff, evaporation, condensation, and precipitation
-As we learn about each one, we will write it on a flap a draw a picture along with it
-Inside the flap we will write the definition of it
-This will be a good resource for us to use
-Allow 20 minutes to make together
-Now I will split the class up into groups of 3
-Each group will be assigned a step
-They will be given water droplets, evaporation strings, or a part of a cloud
-They will work together and decide where the object goes within the cycle
-After we will check our work
-Rain drops should be from precipitation, evaporation should have the strings, and
condensation should have the puff balls as the clouds.
-Allow 10 Minutes
-Return to seats
-Pass out a paper with 100 empty glasses on it
-Go over the question from the beginning of class - what would they do if they didn’t have
access to fresh water and how would it affect them?
-Allow 3 minutes to share
-Most of Earth’s freshwater is frozen
-¾ of the Earth is made from water
-Out of 100 cups have them guess how many would represent fresh water liquid, fresh water
frozen, and salt water
-Go over answer (1,2,and 98)
-Have them color their worksheet
-Put away all materials
-Going to make our own mini water cycles to hang in class
-Have students pass out materials
-Go over directions
-Cut 5 strips light blue paper, 1 bigger strip white, 1 bigger strip dark blue, one sun
-Draw water droplets on 3 pieces to represent precipitation
-Draw white air bubbles on 2 pieces to represent evaporation
-Draw water on the dark blue strip to represent collection/runoff
-Glue cotton balls on white strip to represent condensation
-Glue the labels accordingly on each step
-Glue the strips together and make them form a cylinder to connect
-Attach them to the sun
-Write their names
-Hand them to teacher to hang up when done
-Allow 20 minutes
-Grab their computer when done with project
-Log into Kahoot with game ID
-Play the game as a class about the water cycle
-Put their computers away
Closure/Summarizing Strategies:
-Today we learned how grateful we should be that we have access to fresh water to drink,
cook, shower, brush our teeth, etc.
-I want you to turn to your partner and review the 3 steps of the water cycle and write them
down in on a notecard as your exit ticket
-Tomorrow we are going to learn about soil and what it is made of
-We are even going to make edible soil!
Accommodations/Differentiation:
Follow all IEPs
Student X has an emotional disturbance and needs positive reinforcement. I will give them a
tally after every assignment that is completed. I will already have their foldable folded for
them so they can focus on just filling it out. The order of the day will be on the front of their
notebook. I will reward them for answering all kahoot questions to their ability regardless of
score.
Materials/Resources:
-computer
-smart board
-bulletin board
-power points

-100 cups worksheet
-sample water cycle mobile
Reflective Response:
Report of Student Learning Target/Objectives Proficiency Levels
Remediation Plan (if applicable)
Personal Reflection Questions
-Was there enough time to explain the mobile and how it represents the water cycle?
-Should there have been more background knowledge of water?
