CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter has six elements, background of study,

identification of problem, statement of problem, objective of problem,

significant of problem, and the last sequence of problem.

1.1. Background

Othello (The Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice) is

a drama by William Shakespears. The Story about a moor in the

Venetian army, the named is Othello and his unfaithful ensign, Iago.

Iago is a antagonis character in this Drama, he is very hate and envy to

Othello. The drama has theme of racism, love, jealousy, betrayal,

revenge and repentance.

Many conflicts that occur in the main character can be found in this

story, some conflicts that occur involve other parties, and also other

characters who are the cause of the conflict in the main character.
Conflict is a universal phenomenon in a drama. Therefore, it is not

excessive to say that every characters ever faces with conflict.

Nevertheless, the intensity and the types of conflict may be different.

A conflict may bring an advantage and disadvantage for individual or

partner characters in the drama. If the character can overcome the

problem successfully, it can bring an advantage for him. On the other

way, it can bring a disadvantage for him. In this story there are moral

values related to society in general, namely about racism felt by the

main character. One of them is when a person with dark skin likes

someone with fair skin often discrimination from time to time.

The reason I analyze this drama has a psychological value in

someone who is different, there is more priority to the ego than the

superego makes a loss of himself. and this drama has an interesting

theme, atmosphere, namely tragic and manipulating the situation in

the drama. And this drama is a popular literary work. And the author

often writes tragic love stories.

1.2. Identification of the Problems

After reading script Othello’s drama, the writer identified some

problems. There are as follows:


1. The main character has emotions that cannot be controlled

which cause conflict.

2. An antagonist character makes the main character experience

many conflict.

1.3. Statement of the Problems

Based on the title, there are following questions which the writer

want to analyze in this drama. There are as follows:

1. How do the main characters solve his emotion that cannot be

controlled which cause conflict?

2. What kinds of the an antagonist character makes the main

character experience many conflict?

1.4. Objective of the Problems

Based on the statement of the problems above, the objectives of

writing are as follows:

1. To explain the way of the main characters solve his problem

emotion.
2. To describe the an antagonist character makes the main

character experience many conflict.

1.5. Significant of study

There are some significance in writing this chapter. The first

significance of the analysis is to make me understand about literary

works especially of the drama.

Second , the writer wants if the readers are aware of the

emotions we have, so we are not rash in choosing decisions that lead

to regret. furthermore, the writer hope that the readers especially the

student of English Literature get some lesson from this Drama.

1.6. Sequence of Chapter

The writers into six chapters. Chapter 1 deals with introduction

there are background of study, identification of problem, statement of

problem, objective of problem, significant of problem, and the last

sequence of problem.
