Objective:

Ever since PSL was started by Pakistan cricket board everyone has been skeptical of the impacts
and implications of it ever happening in Pakistan after what everyone knows happened in 2009.
One of the impacts of that event was economic let down and downfall of the inflow of
sponsorship and investments in Pakistan. As most teams and players then refused to even visit
the sports industry proactively went into a stagnant situation. After man years PCB finally
managed to get PSL started and bring back international cricket to the country which in return
proved to be majorly impactful on economy. The objective of this report is to observe all the data
of all the economic results that came into being due to the sporting event and provide a
conclusion on whether as to people perceive this as an opportunity for Pakistan or something that
is eventually going to pull the economy back.

Summary:

PSL had major impacts on the economy of Pakistan and on the other hand people still somehow
think that it has also caused a lot of inconvenience for the people who have to travel every day to
work and due to the security conditions they cannot do that without it being a menace. Still PSL
managed to pull a lot of revenue to Pakistan in the form of sponsorship and broadcasting deals in
international media. According to the popular survey opinion in the end PSL is good for the
economy of Pakistan and it has managed to provide a positive impact.

We would like to thank Ma’am Maria Aleem for providing us this opportunity to do research on
the topic and to come up with our own conclusions. All the finding and analysis have been
obtained fairly and we hope that our report will provide good insight on the impacts of PSL on
the economic condition of Pakistan. We would like to provide further assistance regarding any
information that Ma’am might need regarding this report.

Abstract
Pakistan super League was not much successful during initial seasons. But with the passage of time it

started getting most views through online platforms and also when it comes to other global tournaments.

In the foreign tournaments, the crowd coming to grounds was relatively lesser for Pakistani players

because they were not big names like wise other retired players who still are known for their performance

in cricket at international level. Another reason is that majority of top players don't participate in PSL due

to reasons of being lack of lucrative payment and safety concern In Pakistan. PSL has achieved a mile

stone in the field of cricket in National and international level. Different Pakistani foods attracts the

foreign tourists and fans, while textile industry increases revenue by making shirts, caps and other

accessories for cricket lover fans, and the many local vendors can run their circle by selling these items

during these days. Tickets for watching PSL can also generate millions of revenue for the government.

Sports events like Cricket are compulsory for economic and cultural progress nationwide.

The results of this report depicted that PSL is famous between age range of 20-30, According to this

survey majority of people prefer team “Lahore Qalandars” Most people think that quality of cricket in

PSL makes it worth watching and almost half of the people thought that PSL broadcasting is better on

PTV sports as compared to other channels. Only few people have watched cricket match in a stadium,

moreover results from this survey tells us that many people are interested to watch PSL qualifiers in a

stadium. It is giving good publicity for the image of Pakistan and have a major impact on bringing cricket

back to Pakistan. Majority of the people agreed that regular International cricket in Pakistan was good for

foreign investment and reputation of Pakistan. However on the flip side, according to other people

security concerns and roads blockage has impacted the businesses and work whereas, people have been

neutral about PSL providing job opportunities, boosting GDP of Pakistan and employment rate.

According to survey PSL has produced quality cricketers for Pakistan and they would like more PSL

matches organized and played all over Pakistan.

Introduction
PSL started as a big cricket league on 9th September 2015 in Pakistan. It originally had 5 teams
and each team had to play two matches against each other and then qualifiers to the semifinals
and then finals. League starts regularly every year in March and goes on till April. The first title
was won by Islamabad united in 2015 which then went on to win another one in 2018. The 2017
title was won by Peshawar Zalmi and 2019 one by Quetta Gladiators. All these teams are named
on the basis of the important and amazing cities of Pakistan. This is was considered a
representation of Pakistan. PSL emerged as a huge platform which has been continuously
providing massive talents for the international cricket team of Pakistan for past five years.

PSL just like any other international league in the world has a category for foreign players.
Which were bought in the player bidding by every franchise to strengthen their side. All these
players ever since joining PSL has been a massive support in making PSL what it is today in
2020. Players such as Darren Sami, Shane Watson paved the way for other

At first due to the security concerns it took place in UAE for some years and then gradually
shifted its fixtures in Pakistan. Pakistan after 2009 has suffered a lot financially in the
international market due to the repercussions of what happened to the Siri Lankan team in
Lahore. Terrorism has had its long term effects on the economic development of the country.
Especially cricket as it is a major source of income for most of the economic market in Pakistan.
No matches being played here caused a huge stop on the income through the ticket sales and the
television broad cast rights and brands slowly moving away from the sponsorship. Finally when
PSL started its major goal was to bring cricket back to Pakistan so that the local industry and
local players could get the main benefit from it. In the hindsight major brands coming back to
Pakistan and the local people being employed made a huge impact on the economy.

Even though these were the views of people some other also had contrasting views about cricket
coming back and its impact on the economic development and how much it impacted local
businesses. Keeping these in mind a random survey was conducted to figure out what are the
views of general public on the huge franchise that PSL is now and what are the positive or
negative impacts of it on the economy of Pakistan.

The goal of this report is provide the data for how much PSL has affected general public
economically and socially and to give solutions for how it can be carried on in the future.
This report is based on the extensive survey of more than 35 people and their opinions on the
impacts of PSL on the economic situation of Pakistan and how they view the possible
shortcomings and success of it. Majority of them were in the age bracket of 20-30, so the people
whose lives are actually going to be effected by this. The report aims to give an insight for these
people and to give them an idea about as to what is to come in future years following the events
of cricket coming back home which a lot of people in this generation have not been used to. It
also aims to present forward the issues that general population has encountered and humbly
providing forward the possible suggestions for improving them so that in turn making this
experience amazing for the public and as well as positive for the economic situation in Pakistan.

Due to corona there could be no field research or interviews of the PSL officials regarding their
insights as to how they managed to pull this off and what they see as the long term plan and
impacts of it. We managed to get survey results online from a lot of people which also turned out
pretty helpful in providing us the reactions of public and to see from the point of view the PSL
officials or the government might not be able to see and that could in return helpful for the future
fiscal policy makers of the country and the policy makers in the PSL management.

Conclusion and recommendations
The conclusion that this study brings us on to is that even though there are many short comings
as in to the management and the handling of the even. Lack of proper management of the event
then often leads on to it being problem to a lot of people more than it being an entertainment.
Still according to the survey it proved that a lot of people rate the event over 5 which is a fairly
satisfactory number for an event which has not even took place inside Pakistan for the most part
of it. More than 47 percent of the people think that PSL is a huge success for the sports industry
which in return will then give a huge benefit to the GDP of Pakistan. And 85 percent of
participants then agreed that they will like more PSL matches being conducted in Pakistan. Even
though people did not see any growth in the employment rate or the improvement in the living
conditions it still points to this that regular international cricket in Pakistan is good for foreign
investment and reputation of Pakistan. More and more people are getting satisfied by the
broadcasting services of the matches and more and more people want to look forward to and go
to the live matches in stadium which gives a huge opportunity for this sports league to generate a
lot of revenue and positively impact the economy of Pakistan and make it way into the economic
sector as well as it has made its way into the hearts of public. There is potential to be exploited.

PSL has huge consumer market to exploit in Pakistan which has been deprived of the
international cricket for past 10 years. People need to know that they are being listened to and
being accommodated fairly. Ticket prices of the matches should be lowered down to the
common buying power of the public. So that this can ensure huge turnover can be made possible.
Which then provides a reason for the international popular players to feel save in our country and
no hesitate in taking part in this league. Even when all the matches are being played here.

PSL should try and build a better marketing campaign which then appeals to the foreign viewers
and foreign players which will then build the image of Pakistan in the international market and
investors can look this way and provide opportunities for the management to invest that money
back in to generate more employment opportunities for the local people and finally give back to
the community. The most important part of going to the stadium or watching a match is the
experience and the joy. Stadiums should be made accessible and there should be no
inconvenience for the people commuting to their work and there should be no interruption in the
normal lives of people in the name of security issues. Which does not helps the cause of Pakistan
it worsens it that Pakistan is unsafe for the international players and thus they have to go through
this much effort to ensure that playing in Pakistan is safe. Players and the employee salaries
should be considerate according to the work they put in which will eventually help this franchise
grow as to more and more devoted people join the sports industry. Work environments should be
made safe for both women and men as to they don’t hesitate in working for PSL and PCB.
