Creating a Skybox Virtual Appliance on VMware

This document describes how to implement the Skybox Virtual Appliance on VMware.

Minimal requirements
The following are the minimal requirements for creating a Skybox Virtual Appliance on VMware.
Pilots Deployments
Disk 80 GB 200 GB
Memory 8 GB 32 GB (including 16 GB of
reserved memory that must be
allocated)
CPU Virtual sockets: 2 Virtual sockets: 2

Creating a new virtual machine


The following instructions explain how to create a new virtual machine to use for the Skybox Virtual
Appliance.

To create a new virtual machine


1 Right-click the host and select New Virtual Machine.
2 On the Configuration page, select Typical.

3 On the Name and Location page, in the Name field, type a unique name for the Virtual Appliance
machine.

4 On the Storage page, select the storage destination (datastore) for the virtual machine files.

5 On the Guest Operating System page:
a) In the Guest Operating System field, select Linux.

b) In the Version field, select Other 2.6.x Linux (64bit).

6 On the Network page:
a) In the How many NICs do you want to connect field, select 1.

b) Make sure that Connect at Power On is selected for NIC1.

7 On the Create a Disk page:
a) Make sure that the Datastore field contains the name of the storage unit specified on the
Storage page.
b) In the Virtual Disk Size field, select 80 GB for a pilot or 200 GB for a deployment.

c) Make sure that the Thick Provision Lazy Zeroed option is selected.

8 On the Ready to Complete page, select Edit the virtual machine settings before completion; click
Continue.

9 On the Hardware tab, make sure that:


 Memory is set to 8 GB for pilots or 32 GB for deployments.

10 For deployments, on the Resources tab, reserve a minimum of 16 GB memory.

11 On the Hardware tab:
a) Make sure that CPUs is set to 2.
b) Select CPUs in the list, and then set:
• Number of virtual sockets to 2

• Number of cores per socket to 1

12 On the Options tab, select Boot Options in the list; make sure Force BIOS Setup is selected.

13 Click OK.
14 Turn on the machine.
The BIOS setup utility is displayed.
15 On the Boot tab of the BIOS setup utility, change the boot order so that CD ROM Drive is at the top.
16 Press F10 to save the settings and exit the setup utility.
17 Depending on where you chose to store the files, select either Connect to ISO image on local disk or
Connect to ISO image on a datastore, and then select the file.
18 Restart the machine (press Alt-Ctrl-Insert).
19 When the Skybox Linux Installation Menu appears, select Skybox Appliance Installation.
Note: The restore process takes approximately 20 minutes.
20 Restart the machine.

Installing VMware tools


For best results, you should install VMware tools (right-click the Virtual Appliance machine and select
Guest > Install/Update VMware tools).
