OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of this course are to introduce the new techniques of computer-aided design
ed d

(the feature based design and parametric design), teach the mathematical models of important
ar stu

curves and surfaces used for CAD, apply the CAD techniques to practical mechanical design.
Training of the CATIA CAD/CAM software system is provided in this course, and every student has to
apply the knowledge taught in class to a mechanical product design in a course project by using
is

CATIA.

DESIGN SOFT SKILL

Teaching
sh

Design: An ability to design solutions for complex engineering problems and to design systems,
components or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public
health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations.

Practice
The practice in this course includes 12 lectures, 4 assignments, 6 labs, a course project, a
midterm and a final examination. The theoretical material of CAD techniques is taught in class;
solving the questions in the assignments can help students better understand the kernel CAD
technique (geometric modeling); and six CATIA tutorial labs are arranged across the whole term
to train students to be proficient with this software system. Each student has to apply the
technique to design a mechanical product with free-form surface parts by using CATIA in a
course project.

Evaluation
All assignments will be marked and then the detailed solutions will be provided. The project
report and presentation will be evaluated. The final examination is an effective way to judge the
students performance in this course.
