Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun
Synopsis
A young girl has been experiencing some crazy, strange dreams. My music
video gives the viewer an insight into those dreams as they follow her
throughout the journey. In her deep slumber she visits many different
locations and experiences a range of emotions. Some scenes will also
highlight how she is trapped in her own mind and thoughts. The viewer will
follow her to the end of her dream and see her wake up in shock.
Treatment
Intentions
My intentions for this music video are to create something that expresses
how I have been feeling. As I have had lots of crazy dreams during lockdown,
I wanted to highlight in this music video the realism of them. I want to take
the viewer on a journey so by the end they feel something different. I also
want it to be upbeat and joyful to make people smile. My personal intentions
for this music video are to develop my creative editing skills. I want to
improve my confidence by producing work that I am proud of.
Which STYLE will you be using?
The style I have decided to go for is a conceptual music video. This means
that it has no storyline or plot and can be full of random, fun footage. I think
this fitted in with my song as it is quite alternative like this style of music
video. I will also include some performance elements to it with my character
dancing and doing some lip syncing to the camera.
Which CONVENTIONS and TECHNIQUES will you use?
A typical convention used within my video is lyrical interpretation. This
means when the lyrics of the song interpretated in the visuals. For example, I
will do this by whenever they mention the theme of love of the screen
animated love hearts will be shown. The visuals will also highlight the deeper
meaning to the video with scenes showing her trapped in her own mind and
scenes of her going on a journey of emotions.
What is the PURPOSE of your Music Video?
The purpose of my music video is to entertain a viewer. I want them to feel
enjoyment from watching the video and to give them a chance to reflect and
think about their own dreams.
Who is your target audience?
My music video has no specific gender or race target audience. There will be
no explicit content so it can appeal to any age range. However, I feel like an
audience who likes electropop music or even dance music may enjoy it more
as it has an upbeat vibe.
How has your Research aided your Music Video?
Research has helped the creating of my music video a lot. By researching into
what colours appear in dreams I can then use these in my video to create a
deeper meaning and highlight different emotions portrayed. As well as this
artist research has really helped the creating of my video as I can see what
sort of style Empire of the Sun’s other videos are and maybe include some of
it in my video.

Who is working on the film
I will be the main person working on this video. I will produce and direct the
whole video, so it is exactly how I want it to be, so my creative vision is
shown. I will also be editing the video together. However, as I am starring in
the video, I will be unable to film it so my sister Poppy Hill will be the camera
operator for this project.
Resources needed
No props will be needed, and my costume will stay the same throughout to
highlight the fact she’s in a dream. I will wear baggy pyjamas and have messy
hair. The location’s will be unique and interesting like many of the ones
Empire of the Sun uses and there will be a strong theme of nature
throughout.
