AHU Control Philosophy Overview

The document outlines the control philosophy for various HVAC components in an office building. Modulating dampers in AHUs adjust air flow based on thermostat settings to provide individual room temperature control. Static pressure and return air temperature sensors help regulate VFD fan speed and inform the VRF unit of setpoint achievement. AHUs shut off fans automatically when dampers close to a minimum position or if the VRF unit reaches temperature setpoint. FAHUs operate at constant speed controlled by manual dampers. FCUs are primarily controlled by thermostats but also integrated with a central controller. Integration is provided with the existing EMS for monitoring.

  • Control Philosophy: Outlines the control mechanisms for various HVAC units, including the handling of air temperature and pressure.
  • Additional Control Units: Presents control operations for fan coil units and integration with energy management systems.

CONTROL PHILISOPHY

1. AHU (AIR HANDLING UNIT)

 Modulating type dampers are installed in each duct branches inside admin office building, the
damper actuator will determine the maximum and minimum open positions of the damper
with the help of a dedicated thermostat based on the selected thermal comfort by the
occupant in each room.

 The damper can be open 100% and close to as minimum as 90% not fully closed to ensure the
minimum fresh air supply to each room at all the time.

 A duct mounted static pressure sensor will help to ramp-in or ramp-out the VFD with reference
to the static pressure fluctuations inside the duct due to the thermal comfort adjustment of
individual rooms.

 A Multiport Connect Kit provided with each AHU will help to determine the Air Return
Temperature, hence indicate the VRF ODU to about the set point achieved.

 Once all the dampers are come into its minimum open position at same time, which indicates
no more cooling required inside the zone. Hence, the AHU Fan will off automatically to protect
itself from mechanical damages and also for energy conservation too.

 The AHU fan is off but the VRF not achieved the set temperature, such conditions the Outdoor
unit will be off automatically to avoid freezing on cooling coil. This is enabled by providing a
volt free contact provided in the AHU connection kit by taking feedback from the appropriate
field sensor.

 The field devices like Differential Pressure Sensor will use to monitor the dirty filter status and
fan on/off status. Return air Temperature will use to determine the set point temperature.
Static Pressure Sensor will use to measure the pressure raise inside ducts and regulate the Fan
Speed using a VFD with help of a DDC standalone system.

 Integration with fire alarm control Panel.(FACP)

2. FAHU (FRESH AIR HANDLING UNIT)

 Fresh Air Handling Unit will work in constant speed.

 The flow towards each AHU will be controlled by manual Volume Control Damper.

 The field devices like Differential Pressure Sensor will use to monitor the dirty filter status and
fan on/off status. Air Temperature Sensor will use to determine supply air temperature.

 Integration with fire alarm control Panel.(FACP)

3. FCU (FAN COIL UNIT)

 Primary Control through Thermostat

 A central controller with touch screen will be provided to achieve Coil temperature control,
Fan speed control and scheduling from one point.

4. INTEGRATION WITH EXISTING EMS (ENERGY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM)

 The necessary integration with Energy Management System will be provided for monitoring
purpose.
