Potential and Kinetic Energy

1) A 5.8kg box gained 145J of potential energy when lifted onto a shelf. Using the formula PE=mgh, the height of the shelf was calculated to be 2.5m. 2) A man gained 2268J of potential energy climbing a 3.6m wall. His mass was calculated to be 63kg using the formula PE=mgh. 3) A 1kg meteorite striking the moon at 11 km/s had a kinetic energy of 60,500,000J, calculated using the formula KE=1/2mv^2.

Topic: Potential Energy/Kinetic Energy

1. A box has a mass of 5.8kg. The box is lifted from the garage floor and placed on a shelf. If the
box gains 145J of Potential Energy (Ep), how high is the shelf?

Solution:
PE = potential energy (Joules) PE= mgh
m = mass of box (kg)
g = gravitational field strength (N/kg)
h = difference in height (m)

PE 145 145
h= = = =2.5
mg 5.8 ×10 58

Answer:

The shelf is 2.5m high

2. A man climbs on to a wall that is 3.6m high and gains 2268J of potential energy. What is the
mass of the man?

Solution:
PE = potential energy (Joules) PE= mgh
m = mass of box (kg)
g = gravitational field strength (N/kg)
h = difference in height (m)

PE 2268 2268
m= = = =63
g h 10 × 3.6 36

Answer:

So the mass of the man is 63kg

3. A 1 kg meteorite strikes the Moon at 11 km/s. How much KE is that?

Solution:

1 1
KE= m v 2 KE= ×1 kg ×(11000 m/ s)2
2 2
KE=60,5000,000 J

Answer: KE=60,5000,000 J
