Lab - 1: Introduction to MATLAB/Simulink and V-I Measurement of
Single-Phase system and Three phase Step Down Transformer.
Software Used:
MATLAB
Equipment Used:
PC with installed MATLAB
Pre‐Lab Preparation: Knowledge
about MATLAB Procedure:
i) Open MATLAB
ii) Open Simulink Library
iii) Explore the various options given to you in the Simulink Library namely
Continuous and discrete dynamics blocks, such as Integration, Transfer functions, Transport Delay, etc.
Math blocks, such as Sum, Product, Add, etc.
Sources such as Ramp, Random Generator, Step, etc.
iv) Experiment and read about the various types of blocks and their functions in Simulink.
v) Click the New icon on the Toolbar in order to create a new Simulink model
vi) A window will appear where you may now drag the blocks you want to use from the Simulink Library Browser to
the model surface (or right-click on a block and select “Add to…”).
vii) Use the mouse to wire the inputs and outputs of the different blocks. Inputs are located on the left side of the blocks,
while outputs are located on the right side of the blocks.Use the mouse, while holding the left button down, to drag
wires from the input to the output
viii) Connect the wires to the blocks
ix) Another wiring technique is to select the source block, then hold down the Ctrl key while left-clicking on the
destination block. Try the different techniques.
x) In order to see detailed information about the different blocks, use the built-in Help system as all blocks have them.
xi) Configure the block parameters as you like and click on Simulate.

Questions:
1. Determine the purpose of using POWERGUI?
We need the powergui block to simulate any Simulink model containing Simscape Electrical
Specialized Power Systems blocks. It stores the equivalent Simulink circuit that represents the
state-space equations of the model.
2. Explain the function of Demux?
The function of the Demultiplexer (Demux) is to switch one common data input line to any one
of the multiple output data lines upto a max of 4 hence it decodes the signal of a output line.
3. Describe the purpose of step down transformer?
A Step down Transformer is a type of transformer, which converts a high voltage at the
primary side to a low voltage at the secondary side, it has more windings on the primary side
than the secondary side
1. What have you learnt from this lab?
I have developed an understanding and how to use MATLAB for circuit simulation, Formation
of circuits and analysis of the circuit.
