Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA).
Safety Management System (SMS) is designed to continuously improve safety performance by
identifying hazards, continuously assessing safety risks and proactively mitigate risks before they result
in accidents or incidents. This process known as Safety Risk Management (SRM) or people often call it
Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA).
SRM or HIRA is a continuous activity because the aviation system is constantly changing, new hazards
can be introduced and some hazards and associated safety risks may change over time. In addition, the
effectiveness of implemented safety risk mitigation strategies must be monitored to determine if further
action is required.
