II. Rationale
Organic Agriculture (OA) as defined in Philippine Organic Agriculture Act of 2010
or RA 10068 includes all agricultural systems that promote the ecologically
sound, socially acceptable, economically viable and technically feasible production
of food and fibers. It dramatically reduces external inputs by refraining from the
use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and pharmaceuticals. Organic refers to the
particular farming and processing system, described in the standards and not in
the classical chemical sense.
Nowadays, the practice of using inorganic farm inputs are proven to be at high
costs which has continuously been a burden of famers resulting to meager
income and profit during harvest. This has been significantly an issue in the
agriculture sector for over a period of time which needs to be immediately
addressed. Farmers tend to be gaining income but in reality, it’s the traders and
merchants who yields bulk of money and profit. The practice of organic farming
in other areas of the country has been significantly proven to be of low cost and
at the same time and profit to the farmers.
This advocacy aims to promote organic farming and at the same time encourage
farmers to establish backyard garden for high value crops which will be very
much beneficial to the beneficiaries to increase their income, attain self-
sufficiency and to be independent from merchants and money lenders.
