Triangular Bandage
➢ A triangular bandage is a large triangle of cloth, also referred to
as a cravat, used in first aid. This versatile bandage can be used
as an arm sling, cover for head dressing, binding for splint or as a
tourniquet. It is ideal for holding first aid dressings or cold packs
in place. No first aid kit should be without one.

A triangular bandage is a piece of cloth put into a right-
angled triangle, and often provided with safety pins to
secure it in place. It can be used fully unrolled as a sling,
folded as a normal bandage, or for specialized applications,
as on the head. One advantage of this type of bandage is
that it can be makeshift and made from a fabric scrap or a
piece of clothing.
The standard size of triangle bandages is 40”x40”x56”
(102x102x142 cm). However, you can sometimes find them
in other sizes too. The Boy Scouts popularized use of this
bandage in many of their first aid lessons, as a part of the
uniform is a "neckerchief" that can easily be folded to form
a cravat.

Cravat Bandages
❖ A triangular bandage may be used open or
folded. When folded, it is known as a
cravat. It is prepared as follows:
❖ A medium cravat is made by folding
lengthwise along a line midway between
the base and the new top of the bandage,
in effect, folding the wide cravat bandage
in half lengthwise.
❖ A narrow cravat is made by repeating the
folding.
❖ This method has the advantage that all
bandages can be folded to a uniform
width, or the width may be varied to suit
the purpose for which it is to be used. To
complete a dressing, the ends of the
bandage are tied securely.

them back to the staring point and tie them.

Arm sling
(1) Insert the triangular bandage between the
injured arm and the casualty's chest so the arm
is in the center, the apex of the sling is beyond
the elbow, and the top corner of the material
is over the shoulder of the injured side
(2) Position the forearm so the hand is slightly
higher than the elbow (about a 10 degree
angle).
(3) Fold the material along the base (the long side
opposite the apex) back to the casualty's
fingers, forming a cuff.
(4) Bring the lower portion of the material over
the injured arm so the bottom corner goes
over the shoulder of the uninjured. The elbow
should be inside the sling.
(5) Bring the top corner behind the casualty's
neck.

Arm sling cont.
(6) Tie the two corners together in a non-slip
knot at the "hollow" at the neck on the
uninjured side. If the casualty's right arm is
fractured, for example, tie the knot so it will
rest in the hollow on the left side of his neck.
(7) Secure the apex of the sling to keep the
elbow and forearm from slipping out of the
sling.
(a) Safety pin method. Fold the apex forward
over the elbow and sling. Pin the apex to the
sling.
(b) Pig tailing (twisting) method. Twist the
apex of the sling and tuck it in at the elbow
(see figure 1.1)
