1. What are some forces that influence environmental uncertainty? Which typically has
the greatest impact on uncertainty-environmental complexity or environmental change?
Why?
Changes in the economy, legal rules and regulations, competition, technology, and society are
some factors that influence environmental uncertainty. The impact on uncertainty is
determined by the different dimensions, which range from simple to complicated, stable to
unstable. When the organization is stable and simple, the degree of uncertainty is low;
however, when the company is simple but the environment is unstable, the degree of
uncertainty is higher.
Environmental complexity has a large impact on uncertainty, which occurs when organizations
are complex and unstable. This is because corporations are influenced by a large number of
external elements that impact business, and the rate of change in organizations are highly fast
and unexpected. Telecommunication businesses, oil businesses, and huge health-care systems
are examples of organizations.
2. Describe differentiation and integration. In what type of environmental uncertainty will
differentiation and integration be greatest? Least?
Differentiation highlights the differences in cognitive and emotional attitudes among managers
in various functional sectors. In other words, Differentiation refers to how a company divides
itself into several parts. This is frequent in larger firms; as a company develops larger, it
becomes more differentiated. Businesses with a lot of differentiation provide these individual
components a lot of liberty. Coordination across different departments gets difficult when there
is a lot of differentiation.
When there is a need for high-quality collaboration within departments, integration is meant to
be done. Different divisions can exist in a corporation with a high level of integration, but the
divisions are closely linked and do not likely to be as independent.
When the environment is unstable, differentiation and integration are at their peak, whereas
when the environment is simple and steady, both react at a lesser level.
3. What is an organic organization? A mechanistic organization? How does the
environment influence organic and mechanistic structures?
Mechanistic organization can be characterized as a structure for an organization that is utilized
in mass production, because these organizations require a centralized structure, and distinct
responsibilities are assigned to each individual in such an organization. Furthermore, there are
many hierarchical levels in which top management has complete power, and communication is
vertically valued in a mechanistic company.
In comparison to other organizations, organic organizations are flat and flexible; decision-
making is decentralized, everyone is on the same platform, no one is assigned to a specific role,
and everyone shares the same work and information. Horizontal communication is considered
in such a framework. Aside from that, the number of hierarchy levels is limited. Such
organization are difficult to form because of their complexity.
Mechanistic organization structure can be followed, where the environment is simple and
stable due to low uncertainty, and there is no need integrating roles, coordination among
department, response speed can be lowed as there is no quick changes occurring. But when
there is complex and stable environment there are chances of low-moderate uncertainty, in
such condition some of situation could be same but departments with positions needs to be
added with some boundary spanning, response speed should be trigger to moderate.
Organic structure can be implemented when environment simple and unstable as there are
chances of high-moderate uncertainty. In this company needs to respond quickly as a lot of
changes are occurring in environment organization needs to be decentralize and flexible.
Moreover, team work is must with fewer department and boundary spanning. This kind of
structure is also suitable when there is high uncertainty due to unstable and complex
environment. In this company needs to create more and more departments with extensive
boundary spanning, team work, integrating roles ,Quick response and extensive planning
should be at high level.
