QUARTER FOURTH WEEK 4

TOPIC Different graphs used to represent organized data.

The learner uses graphs to represent organized data: pie chart,
LEARNING bar graph, line graph, histogram, and ogive. (M7SP – Ivd – e – 1)
COMPETENCY  Defines the usage of the different graphs used to represent
organized data.

IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on separate
sheets.

UNDERSTAND
Different Graphs used to Represent Organized Data

Picture speaks more than words. Similarly, a set of data is more like to be
appreciated when it is represented with a graph. Here are some of the common
graphs:

Pie Chart or Circle Graph is a circle divided into sections that use to show how the
relation of a part with the whole.

EXAMPLE: Use the pie chart to answer the questions that follow.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
Members of a Math Club 1. How many members are there in each
grade level?
Grade 7
G7 = 20% x 50 = 0.20 x 50 = 10
36% Grade 8 G8 = 26% x 50 = 0.26 x 50 = 13
Grade 9 G9 = 18% x 50 = 0.18 x 50 = 9
Grade 10 G10 = 36% x 50 = 0.36 x 50 = 18

2. What grade level has the least number

of members in the math club? Grade 9
The circle represents the total number 3. What grade level does the majority of
of members – example there are 50 the math club members belong?
members. Grade 10

Bar Graph is used for making direct visual comparison of data.

EXAMPLE: The bar graph shows the number of cars of different colors sold in one
year in a city. Refer to the graph and answer the questions that follow.

2. Which is the least popular color of cars?
4 Black

4. What color of the car got the most sold?

5. What conclusion can you make from the

graph? Red cars are more popular to
buyers while black cars are not
saleable.

Line Graph is used in presenting data that indicate trends over a period of time. It
is made up of two scales, the vertical and the horizontal scales. On the vertical
scale is found the quantity, while on the horizontal scale is found the time.

EXAMPLE: The graph shows the trend of profit of coffee shop from 2003-2008. Let
us study the graph and answer the questions that follow.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:
Profit of Coffee Shop for 6 Years
Profit in Thousand Pesos

1. What was the profit of coffee shop in

10 2003? 3 thousand pesos
8
6 2. In what year got the lowest profit? 2005
4
2 3. In what year got the highest profit? 2008
0
2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008
4. How much was the increased of profit
Year occurred in between 2006-2007?
3 thousand pesos

5. What is the average profit for six-year

period? 5 thousand pesos

Histogram is a bar graph of the frequencies of numbers in a group of data. It is

used to show the number of data points that fall within the specified range of
values. Unlike bar graphs, histograms have no spaces between the bars.

EXAMPLE: The graph shows the scores of 40 students in a class of 10-items

mathematics test.
 The height of each vertical bar represents the frequency or the number of students
who got in that score.
 The width of each base represents the scores and must have no spaces between
the bars for continuity of data.

Let us study the graph and answer the questions that follow.

3. How many students passed the test if the
0 passing score is 5? 23 students

Ogive is used to show cumulative frequency for a frequency distribution.

Cumulative frequency is the running frequency (successive addition) at every

class interval. There are two types of ogive: the less than type and the more than
type.

EXAMPLE: The example given is a less than type ogive. The total number of
students is 32.

GUIDE QUESTIONS:

There are 20 students who got the mark

less than 12.

1. How many students got the mark

less than 8? 10

2. How many students got the mark

less than 16? 28

3. How many students got the mark of

20? 32

SAQ 1: Which among the different types of graph is appropriate to represent the
change of price of rice in one week?

Key Points
 Pie Chart or Circle Graph is a circle divided into sections that correspond to the
percentage of each data.

 Bar graph is especially useful when comparing quantities.

 A line graph is often the most effective format for illustrating a relationship
between two variables that are both changing.

 Histogram is used to plot the frequency of scores occurrences in a continuous

data set that has been divided into classes.

 Ogive graph is a plot used in statistics to show cumulative frequencies.
