Shading Design Analysis for Ahmedabad

This document discusses shading design for windows in Ahmedabad, India to reduce overheating from December to June and June to December. It calculates the dimensions of horizontal and vertical shading devices for north and west facing walls based on solar angles. Shading angles are 60-70 degrees for optimal shading. Device depths are calculated using trigonometric functions of the window dimensions and shading angles. Climate data from Climate Consultant including temperature, radiation, and wind patterns is also presented.

DECEMBER TO JUNE

Plotting the Over Heating Period onto Sun path From December to June

Shading Protractor Overlaid on Sun path Diagram

SHADING DEVICE FOR NORTH FACING WALL
Vertical shading angle = 60 o
Horizontal shading angle = 60o

HORIZONTAL SHADING DEVICE

∠BAC = VSA
∠DAC = 90o − VSA = 90o − 60o = 30o
tan(∠DAC) = CD / AD
AD = Height of the Window = 1.2m
tan(DAC) = CD / 1.2
tan(30) = CD / 1.2
CD(Depth of Horizontal Shading Device) = tan(30) ∗ 1.2 = 0.58 ∗ 1.2m = 0.696m

VERTICAL SHADING DEVICE

∠DBC = 90o − ∠(ABD) = 90o − 60o = 30o
tan(∠DBC) = DC / BC
AD = Width of the Window = 1.5m
tan(∠DBC) = DC / 1.5
tan(30) = CD / 1.5
DC(Depth of Vertical Shading Device) = tan(30) ∗ 1.5 = 0.58 ∗ 1.5m = 0.87m

SHADING DEVICE FOR WEST FACING WALL

Vertical shading angle = 70 o
Horizontal shading angle = 20o
HORIZONTAL SHADING DEVICE
∠BAC = VSA
∠DAC = 90o − VSA = 90o − 70o = 20o
tan(∠DAC) = CD / AD
AD = Height of the Window = 1.2m
tan(DAC) = CD / 1.2
tan(20) = CD / 1.2
CD(Depth of Horizontal Shading Device) = tan(20) ∗ 1.2 = 0.36 ∗ 1.2m = 0.44m

VERTICAL SHADING DEVICE

∠DBC = 90o − ∠(ABD) = 90o − 20o = 70o
tan(∠DBC) = DC / BC
AD = Width of the Window = 1.5m
tan(∠DBC) = DC / 1.5
tan(70) = CD / 1.5
DC(Depth of Vertical Shading Device) = tan(70) ∗ 1.5 = 2.75 ∗ 1.5m = 4.125m
Since the depth is more than the width of the window, we can split it into 2 vertical shading
device so that the depth reduces by ½.
HSA for Right Side Shading Device = 200
HSA for Left Side Shading Device = 200
Width of the window = 1.5m
Depth of the shading device = Width of the window / tan(HSA)
Depth of the shading device (Right) = 1.5m / tan(20) = 1.5m / 0.363 = 4.13m
Depth of the shading device (Left) = 1.5m tan(20) = 1.5m / 0.363 = 4.13m
