Universal Design For Learning Udl

Digital technologies can be used to implement Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to provide flexible lessons that meet the unique needs of all students. UDL involves providing multiple means of engagement, representation, and action/expression through technology. This allows students choices in tasks and goals, opportunities to demonstrate learning in their own way, and support at different levels. The key is designing lessons from the start to be inclusive rather than adapting later for individual students.

UNIVERSAL How can digital

technologies be used

DESIGN FOR to provide learners

with options for

LEARNING engaging,
representing and

(UDL)
demonstrating their
learning?

THE END OF No student in our classroom is "average". By planning our

lessons for the average student, we are disservicing all of our
AVERAGE students. Each student has unique learning needs.

The principles of UDL allow the teacher to create flexible

lessons, designed to suit the students in the classroom.
USING UDL & Rather than adapting for individual students during the
lesson, the lesson is designed so that all students can be
TECHNOLOGY successful. There is flexibility built into the lesson.

Technology provides an amazing platform for

implementing UDL.

The WHY: Multiple Means of Engagement

Allow the students choice in their tasks (provide authentic tasks to choose from)
Create opportunities for students to set their own goals, and self-monitor their
progressions
Create a space where students can challenge themselves, and model failure and
perseverance
Offer mastery-oriented feedback and allow the students to self-assess and reflect

The WHAT: Multiple Means of Representation

Do not assume background knowledge
Highlight patterns, big ideas, critical features, and relationships
Present course content: visually, verbally, and graphically
Guide information processing
Offer options for students to aquire their knowledge in various ways

The HOW: Multiple Means of Action & Expression

Use mulitple media for communication
Vary how students demonstrate their learning, so that it is authentic to them
Offer various levels of support for each unique learner
Guide appropriate goal-setting & model students to monitor their own progress
