Resultant of Non – Concurrent Force Systems
The resultant of non-concurrent force system is defined according to magnitude, inclination, and
position.
The magnitude of the resultant can be found as follows:
The inclination from the horizontal is defined by:
The position of the resultant can be determined according to the principle of moments.
Example:
1. Determine the resultant of the force system shown in the figure and its x and y intercepts.
2. Completely determine the resultant with respect to point O of the force system shown in
the figure.
Thus, R = 544.68 N upward to the right at θx = 28.25°. The intercepts of R are (-6.9, 0)
and (0, 3.71).
3. Determine completely the resultant of the forces acting on the step pulley shown in the
figure.
4. The Howe roof truss shown in the figure carries the given loads. The wind loads are
perpendicular to the inclined members. Determine the magnitude of the resultant, its
inclination with the horizontal, and where it intersects AB.
5. The resultant of four forces, of which three are shown in the figure is 390 lb directed
down to the right at a slope of 5 to 12 passing through point A. Also determine the x and
y intercepts of the missing force F.
Couple is a system of forces whose magnitude of the resultant is zero and yet has a
moment sum. Geometrically, couple is composed of two equal forces that are parallel to
each other and acting in opposite direction. The magnitude of the couple is given by:
Where F are the two forces and d is the moment arm, or the perpendicular distance
between the forces.
Couple is independent of the moment center, thus, the effect is unchanged in the
following conditions.
The couple is rotated through any angle in its plane.
The couple is shifted to any other position in its plane.
The couple is shifted to a parallel plane.
In a case where a system is composed entirely of couples in the same plane or parallel
planes, the resultant is a couple whose magnitude is the algebraic sum of the original
couples.
Example:
1. A couple consists of two vertical forces of 60 lb each. One force acts up through A and
the other acts down through D. Transform the couple into an equivalent couple having
horizontal forces acting through E and F.
2. Determine the resultant moment about point A of the system of forces shown in the
figure.
3. The three-step pulley shown in the figure is subjected to the given couples. Compute the
value of the resultant couple. Also determine the forces acting at the rim of the middle
pulley that are required to balance the given system.
4. A force system consists of a clockwise couple of 480 N·m plus a 240 N force directed up
to the right through the origin of X and Y axes at θx = 30°. Replace the given system by an
equivalent single force and compute the intercepts its line of action with the X and Y
axes.
MO = 480 N⋅m.
The force system above can be replaced by the following three force system shown
below where the two pair into a couple which is the couple 480 N·m. The effect of
these forces would be the same as the original system.
The two opposing forces above will get canceled, thus, leaving a single force with the
same effect as the three forces above which in turn has the same effect to the original
system.
5. The resultant of four forces, of which three are shown in the figure, is a couple of 480
lb·ft clockwise in sense. If each square is 1 ft on a side, determine the fourth force
completely.
Let F4 = the fourth force and for couple resultant, R is zero.
