Is there a relationship between peer pressure and students’ self-development?
People often hold different opinions about peer pressure, but a majority of them believe that peer
pressure make students do things against their own will. Some students may want to be like their friends
and this make them indulge in activities that their fellow peers are involved in. this maybe because they
believe when they copy their peers, it makes them accepted in a certain social group.
There can be common social pressures among students. These include; stealing, drugs and alcohol abuse,
bullying, dangerous behaviors and indulging in sexual activities. It is a myth to say that all peer pressure
is negative. Peer pressure can affect students either positively or negatively.
If students learn to manage peer pressures properly, it can inspire them to be more focused and
determined. Some peers have become good role models for other students and has paved way for their
self-growth. When students have positive role models, it can lead to self-development as they can draw
good qualities from the role models. Watching the deeds of their peers and how hard they work to achieve
their goals will motivate students to put more effort in what they do.
Since students spend most of their time with their peers away from home, parents should create and
nurture a strong bond with their teenage kids using the little available time. This way, they instill ethical
and moral values in their kids and build their self-confidence. Teenage students should be taught to be
assertive and stand up for their beliefs. Students who can make their own decisions are less likely to be
influenced negatively by other.
In conclusion, though peer pressure has both good and bad sides, it is important how students understand
and look at it. A constructive and positive thinking group of peers is good for students’ self-development.
Therefore, it is true to say that there is a relationship between peer pressure and students’ self-
development.
