WATER AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING CLUSTER

Bachelor of Civil Engineering with Honours programme included the courses on Water and
Environmental Engineering. The courses were offered by Water and Environmental
Engineering Cluster. This cluster has expertise in a wide variety of fields, including
environmental engineering, environmental management, wastewater engineering, water
supply engineering, solid waste management, hydraulics, hydrology, water resources
engineering, groundwater engineering, and hydraulic engineering. By combining a tradition
of excellence with a passion for innovation, our cluster provides students with a highly
competitive graduate education. Alumni have gone on to positions in industry, consulting
firms, government agencies, research institutions, and universities. Our cluster has a large
and diverse portfolio of research and an extensive publication record. It plays a leading role
in national and international research activities and provides advice and guidance to
Malaysia and overseas governments and international agencies.

DEPARTMENT OF LABORATORY MANAGEMENT

In our faculty, we provided laboratories to all

discipline related to civil engineering (including
water and environmental engineering) and the
laboratories were managed by Department of
Laboratory Management. In the laboratory,
students were exposed to several equipment and
in some laboratory procedure, the chemical is
used. In order to provide the good working
environment which is not expose the staff and the
student to the chemical risk hazard, our
laboratories were assessed for the chemical risk
hazard and based on the assessment, we improved
occupational safety health (OSH) compliance
related to industrial hygiene (chemical). We had
been recognized as Excellent in Systematic
Occupational Health Occupational Health
Enhancement Level Programme (SOHELP)

MISSION 2021

Laboratory accreditation is the best

assurance that the laboratory data you
are relying on was generated in a
competent laboratory. Laboratories that
have been accredited to the ISO/IEC
17025 standard have been assessed by
an independent, impartial third party
accreditation body and have been found
to meet the requirements of the
standard and are technically competent
to conduct the testing for which they are
accredited.

Since our cluster members are

academically qualified and technically
qualified (Professional Engineer (Ir),
Professional Technologist (Ts) and
Chemist (ChM) we are moving forward
to offer the best quality of laboratory
testing for our current and potential
client

Project Title: POLICY DIALOGUE AND NETWORK BUILDING OF MULTI-STAKEHOLDER ON
INTEGRATED DECENTRALIZED DOMESTIC WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT IN ASEAN
COUNTRIES (PODIWM)

Executive summary

This project “Policy Dialogue and Network Building of Multi-stakeholders on Integrated

Decentralized Domestic Wastewater Management in ASEAN Countries” or PODIWM is a part of a 2-
year JAIF project on establishment of multi-stakeholder networking and policy dialogue in ASEAN
region initiated from 11 July 2018 with an overall objective is to contribute to the networking,
capacity development and policy development for the domestic wastewater treatment in line with
10 ASEAN member States context. It aims to create an opportunity for dialogue and networking of
the policy makers and experts on standardization and decentralized domestic wastewater treatment
in ASEAN countries. This project aims to serve as a policy and institutional design development
platform for multi-stakeholders on integrated domestic wastewater management and technology
showcase of decentralized wastewater treatment in ASEAN countries. The project objective matches
with the ASEAN community Blueprints in the context of economic integration of the ASEAN
countries. Standard harmonization leads to the ASEAN market rule sharing which can promote the
trading activities in the region. Project contributes to the priority of Japanese government through
the National Institute of Environmental Studies (NIES) of Japan by referring to the Japanese standard
and technology on the process of standardization. At the end of the regional meeting, participants
are expected to produce consensus on the action plan for standardization in each country. The scope
to be undertaken within this project includes: i) Survey and evaluation for policy, legislation
framework and technology on domestic wastewater treatment in target countries, and ii)
Development of policy option and support of the policy formulation through the consultation
meetings. To achieve the objectives, Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting (MURC) led by Mr.
Kawatani Koryu has been appointed to this project. MURC has been supported by a local service
provider in Malaysia led by Associate Prof. Dr. Aeslina Abdul Kadir, Mohd Ikhmal Haqeem Hassan
and team from Faculty of Civil and Built Environment, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM)
from 22 May 2019 until 13 November 2020. Overall, this project would be beneficial for ASEAN
region in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 which is to ensure availability and sustainable
management of water and sanitation for all.

Project Title: GUIDELINES FOR FILTERED DRINKING WATER QUALITY IN COLLABORATION
WITH FOOD QUALITY DIVISION, MINISTRY OF HEALTH MALAYSIA

Executive summary

This consultancy work was commenced in 2017 until 2019 in development of the guidelines of
filtered drinking water that will be launched in October 2020. The guidelines is to lead the
manufacturers or importers of water filter equipment in applying for the certificates in marketing
their product. The certificate will be award by Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) after passing the
testing of media and water quality. The testing of media will be conducted in Faculty of Civil and
Built Environment (FKAAB), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). The testing will be
collaborated with the expert on materials testing from Faculty of Mechanical and Manufacturing
Engineering (FKMP), Faculty of Technical Engineering (FTK) and Faculty of Electrical and Electronic
Engineering (FKEE). Meanwhile, testing of water quality will be conducted at accredited laboratory
that was identified by KKM. Besides of guideline development, the consultancy work also invited as
expert matter in Filtered Drinking Water Quality Technical Committee which involve of several
government agencies and industries. Several problems related to water filtered were discussed and
advised the solution to KKM. In addition, the consultancy work also involve as speaker for training to
KKM’s technical staff regarding to drinking water quality & water supply that was conducted at
Selangor State Health Department, Shah Alam and State Health Department Federal Territory of
Labuan.

Project Title: STUDY ON SEDIMENT TRANSPORT CAPACITY FOR INTERGRATED RIVER BASIN
MANAGEMENT (IRBM)

Executive summary

This project was started in September 2019 for 18 months for Sungai Batu Pahat, Sungai Johor
and Sungai Mersing. The objectives of the present study include the assessment of the river
morphology, hydrological and sediment transport modelling and development of river
register database. Field works on selected sites for the three rivers were made to assess the
capacity of the river to convey both water and sediment. Data collection on bed material
was made to characterize the physical characteristics of sediment responsible for sediment
transport that determines the river response in terms of erosion and deposition. A detailed
sediment transport study at six sites for each river was conducted to determine the
suitability of existing sediment transport equations for use in the selected sediment
transport models
