Common questions

Individuals can become more eco-friendly by adopting habits such as reducing energy consumption by turning off lights when not in use, choosing public transportation or carpooling to decrease vehicular emissions, and recycling materials like paper, plastic, and metals to minimize landfill contributions .

Metals are used in the manufacture of bells due to their sonorous property, which enables them to produce a clear, ringing sound when struck. In contrast, wood lacks this property and does not resonate in the same way when hit, making it unsuitable for bell production. Additionally, metals are durable and can withstand repeated striking without significant wear or damage .

Reusing items contributes to waste reduction by extending the life cycle of products, thereby decreasing the need for new resources and lowering waste generation. Examples of reusable items include glass jars, which can be used for storage, and cloth bags, which can replace single-use plastic bags for shopping .

A displacement reaction is a type of reaction in which a more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution. For example, when zinc granules are added to copper sulphate solution, zinc displaces copper to form zinc sulphate and copper metal, with the equation: Zn + CuSO4 -> ZnSO4 + Cu .

Copper introduced into a zinc sulfate solution does not lead to any reaction because copper is less reactive than zinc according to the reactivity series. Since displacement reactions require a more reactive metal to displace a less reactive metal, copper cannot displace zinc, resulting in no observable chemical change .

The reactivity series of metals is an empirical arrangement of metals according to their reactivity from highest to lowest. Based on typical reactivity trends, the order from most reactive to least reactive for the metals iron, sodium, copper, and zinc is: Sodium > Zinc > Iron > Copper .

A copper vessel acquires a dull green coating when exposed to moist air due to the formation of a copper carbonate compound, a result of copper reacting with carbon dioxide and water in the air. This green layer, known as patina, indicates that copper, while relatively stable, is reactive enough to undergo oxidation and form compounds that alter its surface appearance .

Gold and silver are preferred materials for making jewellery due to their lustrous appearance, resistance to tarnish, and malleability which allows them to be crafted into intricate designs. These properties make them aesthetically appealing and durable for decorative purposes .

Sodium metal is stored in kerosene because it is highly reactive, especially with water and moisture in the air. To prevent it from reacting prematurely and potentially causing a dangerous exothermic reaction, sodium is submerged in kerosene, which acts as a stable, non-reactive liquid barrier that excludes air and moisture .

Metals generally react with acids to produce hydrogen gas and a corresponding salt, while non-metals typically do not react with acids in this way. For example, when a metal like zinc reacts with hydrochloric acid, it forms zinc chloride and hydrogen gas. In contrast, many non-metals are not capable of such reactions as they do not liberate hydrogen gas upon acid interaction .
