1) In a R-22 refrigeration system the capacity is 180 kW at a temperature of -30⁰C. The vapour
from the evaporator is pumped by one compressor to the condensing pressure of 1500 kPa.
Later the system is revised to a two-stage compression operating on the cycle shown in Figure
16-16 with intercooling but with no removal of flash gas at 600 kPa.
a) Calculate the power required by the single compressor in the original system
b) Calculate the total power required by the two compressors in the revised system.

3.) A two-stage Ammonia system using flash gas removal and intercooling operates on the cycle
shown in Figure 16-12a. The condensing temperature is 35⁰C. The saturation temperature of
the intermediate-temperature evaporator is 0⁰C, and its capacity is 150 kW
The saturation temperature of the low-temperature evaporator is -40⁰C, and the capacity is 250
kW. What is the rate of refrigerant compressed by the high stage compressor. Also calculate
the power required by the compressors. Ans. 0.411 kg/s, 73.82 kW

4) A two-stage R22 system that uses flash gas removal and intercooling serves a single low-
temperature evaporator, as in Figure 16-10a. The evaporating temperature is -40⁰C, and the
condensing temperature is 30⁰C. The pumping capacity of the high and low- stage compressors
is shown in Figure 16-18 by Stoecker . What is:
a) The refrigeration capacity of the system.
b) The intermediate pressure.

5) In an Ammonia refrigeration system, the capacity is 210 kW at a temperature of -20⁰C. The


vapour from the evaporator is pumped by one compressor to the condensing pressure of
1431.5 kPa. Later the system was revised to a two-stage compression operating on the cycle
shown below with intercooling but no removal of flash gas at 555 kPa.
a) Calculate the power required by the single compressor in the original system.
b) Calculate the total power required by the two compressors in the revised system.

6)An Ammonia Refrigeration system has a capacity of 210 kW at an evaporating temperature of


-20⁰C when the condensing pressure is 1431.5 kPa. Compute the total power required by the
two compressors in the system shown below where there is no intercooling but there is flash-

1) A two-stage cascade refrigeration system uses Ammonia as the working substance. The
evaporator is at -35⁰C and the high pressure condenser is at 1514.3 kPa. The cascade condenser
is a direct contact type. The refrigeration load is 90 tons. Determine (a) the mass flow rate in
the low-pressure loop, (b) the mass flow rate in the high-pressure loop. (c) the power required,
(d) the COP, (e) the quantity of the fluid entering the evaporator.

2) A two-stage cascade refrigeration system uses Ammonia as the refrigerant. The mass flow
rate in the high pressure loop is 0.10 kg/s. The condenser saturated temperature is 38⁰C and
the evaporator temperature is -40⁰C. The cascade condenser is a direct-contact type.
Determine: a) The refrigerating effect in tons, b) the power required, c) the COP

3) The events of a cascade, split-stage, low temperature refrigeration cycle are as follows. A R12
vapour refrigerating system operates between -10⁰C and 33⁰C with saturated liquid on the high
side of the expansion valve and saturated vapour entering the compressor whose volumetric
efficiency is 88%. An Ammonia refrigeration system operates between -35⁰C and 0⁰C with
saturated liquid entering the expansion valve and saturated vapour entering the compressor
whose volumetric efficiency if 85%. The R12 evaporator serves as the condenser for the
Ammonia. For the ideal cycle and 10 kW of refrigeration, find: a) The displacement rate of each
compressor, b) the total power required for compression efficiencies of 85%.
