VERBAL ABUSE
WHAT IS VERBAL ABUSE?
Verbal abuse (also verbal attack or verbal assault) is the act of forcefully criticizing, insulting, or
denouncing another person. It is usually happens in private where no one else can intervene and
eventually becomes a regular form of communication within a relationship. ( Shenna)
Verbal Mistreatment of Elderly
There are various types of elderly abuse, including physical abuse, neglect, emotional and psychological
abuse, sexual abuse, financial exploitation, and verbal abuse. Verbal mistreatment is one of the most
common types of abuse in long-term care facilities, and unfortunately, it’s also one of the most difficult to
identify and prove. (nica ,you can change or add the context freely)
Types of Verbal Abuse
Verbal mistreatment comes in many forms. It can come from family members, nursing home staff and

considered verbal mistreatment. This includes the following. (shenna)
Insults, name calling or profanities
Yelling and screaming
Mocking and criticizing
Threats of harming the resident or his or her
family
Undermining or trivializing concerns or
interests and belittling
Excluding in activities or ignoring
Preventing the resident from seeing their
visitors

House Bill 7030 or the proposed “Anti-Elder Abuse Act,” principally authored by Rep. Victor
Yap of Tarlac, aims to protect senior citizens from violence. The bill, which defines elder abuse
and prescribe penalties for offenders, was approved on second reading last week.
The bill defines elder abuse or abuse against senior citizens as the following: (a) physical abuse,
(b) psychological, mental or emotional abuse, (c) economic or financial abuse and material
exploitation, (d) sexual abuse or non-consensual sexual contact of any kind, (e) neglect by refusal
or failure to fulfill obligations who has responsibilities to provide care, as well as (f)
abandonment or desertion by leaving a senior citizen unattended. (nica)
How Can Verbal Abuse Be Prevented? (shenna)
Before selecting a nursing home, family members should tour the
nursing home as well as speak to staff. If possible, they should
also try to speak to other patients and their families to get a better
sense of the level of care.
Once the patient is admitted, the family members should visit
regularly and become familiar with the staff members who care
for their loved one. If they suspect verbal abuse, they should
remove the patient immediately and report the abuse to the
authorities.
HB 7030 also mandates the DSWD to provide
rehabilitative counseling and treatment to perpetrators
towards learning constructive ways of coping with anger
and emotional outbursts, as well as reforming their ways.
