Monitor and provide care for the mother and her baby.
Nurse provides intensive support for the patient, and is ready to intervene, at a
moment’s notice.
During a routine delivery, a labor and delivery nurse assists the physician by
anticipating the need for supplies and equipment, encouraging the patient,
administering medicine, and attending to the baby after birth.
Prepping a patient for a Cesarean Section, retrieving special equipment, and
calling for assistance are just a few of the tasks that may be required.
In the operating room, a labor and delivery nurse may serve as a scrub nurse or
a circulating nurse, acting as the primary patient advocate for the mom.
Labor and delivery nurse provides aftercare for both mom and baby.
Monitor and time contractions during labor and delivery;
Administer epidurals (pain management) and other medications;
Assist the doctor in inducing labor by administering Pitocin or Cytotec;
Monitor the vital signs of the mother and the heart rate of the baby;
Monitor for potentially dangerous complications of medications commonly
given during labor and delivery;
Communicate with the doctor to provide timely and accurate information;
Identify complications and notify the doctor; and
Prepare for cesarean (c-section) delivery, including emergency c-sections.

Talking the mother through what’s happening and what’s to come
Holding her hand or supporting her physically in other ways
Providing calm reassurance and encouragement
Educating her on how and when to push
