Development of Incubated Chicken Embryo

The document summarizes the development of a chicken embryo over a 21-day incubation period. Pictures show the embryo's development from days 1-18. Key changes are outlined for embryos incubated at 24, 33, 48, and 72 hours, including formation of the membrane systems, head positioning and size increases. Distinguishing characteristics are described for each time period. The morphological changes from days 1-21 of incubation involve development of vascular structures by day 2, limb buds by day 3, torsion and flexion by day 4, organ formation by day 7, feather tracts by day 10, and hatching positioning by day 20.

C. Indicate other distinguishing characteristics of the embryos incubated at different hours.

• 24 hours of incubation
Chick is still not visible, but the yolk is still visible, and the growing membrane
system is somewhat visible and detectable.

• 33 hours of incubation
The head and the body of the chick is still undeveloped, as well as its wings and
beak. Large bulging similar to an optic organ can be seen; The membrane is thick and
visible.
• 48 hours of incubation
The head and body are almost completely developed; The wings, legs and beak are
evident; feathers are dense and almost surround the body; The membrane is thin.

• 72 hours of incubation
Good body dimensions, nearly full body structures, dense fur that covers a
substantial portion of the chick, less yolk, and a thin and delicate membrane layer.

E. ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS
1. What are the observable changes in the chicken embryo development incubated at 24,
33, 48 and 72 hours?
The observable changes in the chicken embryo development incubated at 24 hours are
the membrane system, the position of the head and the size of the body. The changes in
these aspects are also visible in the 33, 48, and 72 hours. However, the amniotic fluid
was just observed after 48 hours of incubation.
2. What are the morphological changes that happen in the chick embryo from the first day
of incubation up to the twenty first day of incubation?

A pointed thickened coating of cells becomes evident in the caudal or tail end of the
embryo soon after incubation starts. The blood islands begin to connect and form a
vascular structure on the second day of incubation, while the heart develops elsewhere.
The beak starts to grow at the end of the third day of incubation, and limb buds for the
wings and legs are visible. Torsion and flexion are still present on the fourth day. The
chick's entire body rotates 90 degrees and it lays flat on its left side on the yolk. Since
the embryo's head and tail are so close together, it forms a "C" pattern. As part of the
digestive and respiratory processes, the mouth, tongue, and nasal pits form. The
embryo has all of the organs needed to survive life after hatching by the end of the
fourth day of incubation, and the majority of the embryo's parts can be established. On
the seventh day, the wings and feet have digits, the heart is entirely embedded in the
thoracic cavity, and the fetus resembles a bird. Feathers and feather tracts become
evident after the tenth day of incubation, and the beak hardens. The claws are emerging
on the fourteenth day, and the embryo is going into place for hatching. The chick is in
the hatching position after twenty days, the beak has pierced the air sac, and pulmonary
respiration has begun. The chick will then continue its breakout from the shell after 21
days of incubation.
