CHAPTER 3
ACTIVITY # 04

ACTIVITY 4.1
DIRECTION: After watching the movie, “Lost in Translation,” write a one page reflection paper using the
following motive questions as your guide:
a. What aspects of cultural diversity are predominant in the movie?
b. How did the main character/s manifest their cultural awareness in the movie?
c. Why do you think the movie was titled “Lost in Translation”? What meanings does it suggest
in relation to cultural diversity and communication in a multilingual setting?

Lost in Translation is a movie that reflects deeply on society at large. Is actual verbal exchange regularly
disregarded by, and through, a society’s language and culture? While the story takes place in Tokyo, it
includes a very contrasted backdrop of westerners in Tokyo, arguably the epicenter of Japanese culture.
One of the essential characters, Bob Harris, is a middle-aged man and diminished film star who travelled
to Japan to shoot a whiskey commercial in trade for $2 million. During his time in Tokyo, he met a young
newlywed named Charlotte who was with her husband. They ran into every other while staying at the
same hotel. Despite their age differences, there was a natural emotional bond between Charlotte and
Bob. That was how the story [Link] first half of the film is filled with sit back and dry humor to
spotlight the issues related with cultural differences and language barriers. For example, when the
Suntory agency sent a “Premium Lady” (an escort) to Bob’s hotel room, she insists that Bob “Lip” her
stockings. This scene is particularly humorous because her heavy accent prohibits her from properly
pronouncing “Rip.” However, it is uncertain whether or not Bob can also be wondering that their way of
life surely does some thing known as lipping. So, he seemed confused, startled, and irritated all at the
same [Link] emotional frustration did not stop in the motel room. For example, Bob’s emotions
appeared to ebb and float from confusion and annoyance to frustration during the filming of the
commercial. He seemed to be out of his thing at some point of the shoots — possibly as a end result of
feeling left out or now not belonging. While Bob used to be taking pictures the commercial, the director’s
aggressive and verbose manner confounded him. He not often felt assured in understanding what the
director wanted due to the fact of the significant discrepancy between how long-winded the director used
to be but how extremely quick the translations were. That makes Bob experience uneasy seeing that he
thinks the translator is hiding some thing from him — the resultant of cultural differences, which Bob
does not [Link] essential cause humans locate it challenging in grasp each other is logical —
language and culture. Indeed, making an attempt to healthy into a foreign environment and lifestyle can
be challenging. It truly was once for Bob and Charlotte. As the story unfolds, a feel of belonging and
understanding of each different is critical, now not solely to Bob and Charlotte but also in human
relationships generally. After a long day, they every occurred to wander into the inn bar now not knowing
of the other’s intention to do the same. Perhaps they have been lost, or simply worn-out from a lengthy
day in a abnormal overseas land. Their attempts to blend into their surroundings were futile. Once they
every settled into their respective spots in the bar, they every caught a glimpse of the other. We’re no
longer positive if he was once looking for company, however he was once suffering from a middle-aged
disaster and felt loss. He desired a feel of alleviation in a overseas country, and then he met Charlotte.
They both shared feelings of loss in exceptional stages.

For Bob, this may want to be his marriage — for Charlotte, hers too. As Charlotte approached Bob, he
playfully said, “Can you hold a secret? I’m making an attempt to organize a jail break. I’m looking for,
like, an accomplice. We have to first get out of this bar, then the hotel, then the city, and then the
country. Are you in or you out?” Charlotte understood Bob, and it excited her. Bob averted his marital
issues by using focusing on different things, like his youngsters and the rug colors in his home.
Charlotte, on the other hand, buried in loneliness in the lodge and was once left out by means of her
busy husband. Both of them felt out of sync with every other’s partner and misplaced in every other’s
translation. I suppose this is the factor that the director Sofia Coppola desired to highlight — human
being is usually hard in grasp every different dismiss language and culture. Language is the first weapon
that leads isolation and conflict.
