Heritage and History
Heritage is not history.
- What’s the difference?
o When we talk about history, it is studying the past
o For heritage, it is not what happened in the past, but what has survived in the past
Heritage is more on the context of tangible evidences. (relics, artefacts, buildings, etc.)
Heritage and Arts
- Could be individual or collectively created products with value
- We talk about skills and imagination here
Heritage refers to valued property.
- These are tangible items which have value such as properties (historical buildings), artworks,
books, or manuscripts, passed down from previous generations
- Majority of heritage passed down thru generations are usually art
- They are of special value and worthy of preservation
- Because of heritage, these arts are preserved
- People are aware of the value of their arts because of heritage
Heritage and Identity
- It is a person’s unique inherited sense of identity
- Each of us have identities
o Ex: When you say Kapampangan, people will know that we are good cooks and loud
o Ex: Ilocanos are thrifty and know how to budget their money
- It may include, values, culture, tradition, handed from previous generations
- These generations may actually absorb the traditions and customs from previous generations
- Generation thru generation may be able to absorb the sense of identity thru heritage
- Not all traits are absorbed in the generation, only the meaningful elements of our family’s
identities

Cultural customs and traditions when preserved…
When you preserve all the traditions, future generations may be able to inherit those
- Heritage is a keystone of culture
- Heritage refers to the aspect of culture inherited by the present, and preserved by the future
- Culture refers to ideas, customs social behaviors or a particular group of society
- Heritage preserves culture

Heritage in Tourism Development
Historical and cultural potential of the country is one of the main factors of tourism, because…
1. It is important means for involvement of tourists as acquaintance to historical and cultural
heritage is a strongest incentive tourist motive;
a. Historical and culture helps a destination because majority of tourists reason are in line
with this
2. Objects of cultural and historical heritage are an important asset of the modern cities which
can make profit and significantly influence their economic development;
a. People are living in a modern world, a futuristic type of set up
b. These cultures and heritage would help a modern region to generate incomes and
economic benefit
c. We need to thank the money that comes from the tourists and would be given to the
economy of a city
3. It is of great importance in the social sphere, leveling seasonal fluctuations evenly distributing
tourism streams on the territory;

4. It creates favorable image of the region, “branding” of historical and cultural heritage which is
used as the effective tool of the adoption of leadership on the tourist arena.

What is Heritage Tourism?
- The National Trust defines heritage tourism as traveling to experience the places, artifacts, and
activities that authentically represent the stories and people of the past and present. It includes
cultural, historic, and natural resources” (National Trust for Historic Preservation, 2008)
- Simply put, it is visiting places of the past (artifacts, trying activities, that represent what had
happened in the past)

- Maximizing the use of heritage it should have an equivalent M.U + M.C to get M.P
- Development is the transformation of goods and services to improve man’s quality of life
- How to use the best of heritage and maximize its use
The utilization of heritage to address contemporary needs is relevant to users:
- Educational value – provides intellectual and spiritual enrichment over a long period of time
- Economic value – provide returns of investment over a short turnover period
Different uses of heritage:
- Heritage and cultural tourism focuses on historic sites and colorful festivals as tourist
destinations to generate income through tour fees and job generation
- Heritage and human settlement refers to the restoration and development of dilapidated
ancestral houses for transients, students, and tourists
- Heritage and health juxtaposes the contemporary use of traditional medicine and conventional
health practices with modern clinical and hospital approaches
- Heritage and interpretation highlights the educational and value formation function of museums
and galleries in translating heritage in the daily context of the visitor
- Heritage and culinary arts delves on the inclusion of traditional food in convenient stores and
globalizing fast food chains

1. The historic environment is a proven source of benefit to local economics, particularly through
tourism.
2. Attractive heritage environment assists in attracting external investment as well as maintaining
existing businesses of all types, not just tourism-related.
a. Means that there is a good development planner in that area that is good for
investment
b. Therefore, if there is a good protection of heritage sites, the investors will think the
government are paying good attention to them

areas as well, not just tourism-related
3. People are very proud of their local history, but don’t always express how much they value a
place until it’s threated.

4. Adaptive reuse of heritage buildings is an important factor in creating sustainable communities.
a. Example: an abandoned building getting preserved for modern use
5. Heritage buildings add value to regeneration projects, both in terms the economic and
environmental advantage of reuse over new buildings.
6. Heritage places can be a potent driver for community action.
a. Example: preserving/protecting things that have sentimental value
7. Increased community values and greater social inclusion can be achieved through a focus on
heritage matters.
a. A relationship between the community and government
b. Since the heritage resources are being protected, the community would also want to
protect them as well
c. Example: wearing traditional clothing (South Korea – Hanbok)
8. The heritage places are an excellent local educational resource for people of all ages.
a. Making the community understand the heritage
b. When the community is involved in heritage sites/items, they will have a sense of (civic)
responsibility because they know the value of that heritage resource
