Course Biochemistry Prerequisite General Chemistry

Course Description

Course Objectives:

1. Identify some basic properties of the different classes of organic compounds such as hydrocarbons, alcohols. Aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amines and amides.

2. Describe the chemical composition, food sources and functions of the different biological molecules such as carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, vitamins and minerals.

3. Discuss the interrelated functions of carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, vitamins and minerals.

4. Discuss the different biochemical processes involved in the different biological molecules: Energy Metabolism, Tricarboxylic Acid Cycle, etc.

5. Discuss the effects of oversupply and insufficient supply of the different biological molecules.
