Practical Research 2: Self-Learning Package

This document provides guidance on writing the scope and delimitations section of a research study. It explains that the scope outlines what the study covers in terms of time period, location, subjects, and objectives based on the research question. The limitations section acknowledges any methodological or other challenges that constrain the study. The document provides examples of what to include in each section and emphasizes that these sections are not excuses for weak research, but rather help establish parameters and acknowledge constraints to improve the study. It also discusses how to explain the significance of the study by identifying who will benefit and how.

LESSON TITLE: SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Before you begin reading and learning our lesson, take a moment of silence and feel the presence of
Lord through this prayer:

Dear Lord and Father of all,

Thank you for today. Thank you for ways in which

you provide for us all.
For Your protection and love we thank you.
Help us to focus our hearts and minds now on what
we are about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as we listen and
write.
Guide us by your eternal light as we discover more
about the world around us.
We ask all this in the name of Jesus.
Amen.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE LESSON

A blessed day! This week you learn about scope and delimitations of the study.
Please, be patient in reading and comprehending the following informations. At the
end of this module, you will going to do some learning activity. Good luck!

Scope and Limitations of the Study

Although we may want to capture all of the complexities we observe in a social

phenomenon,we have to set certain parameters to our [Link] scope and limitations section of your
study is a short section where you clarify what your study covers based on your research topic, the
possible limitations of your study, and how your study is constrained by particular factors that you
encountered in the research [Link] section is often found in the beginning of your research study.

Scope
Recall your research question and problem [Link] aspects set the direction for your
[Link] scope is where you clearly set what your study covers, its time
period, location, subjects, context, and its specific objectives, without any pretense that your study covers
anything beyond what is [Link] answers the phrase,"The coverage of this study is..."or" This study
addresses..."and other similar phrases.
In writing your scope, you clearly set the parameters of your study, benchmark your work, and
allow your fellow researchers ample ground to study your research work, use it or point its strengths and
possible areas for improvement.

Limitations
Despite our best efforts, research outputs often have a set of limitations. This could be due to
methodological challenges, a lack of available literature (for especially novel studies), and others. In the
limitations section of your paper, you clearly state the limitations you encountered during your research
process and how much you think these aspects detract from your research paper and your overall
purpose. Think of the limitations as a humble acknowledgment of your current capabilities, rather than
have your adviser, clients, and fellow researchers criticize for not acknowledging critical gaps.

In writing the scope and delimitation, the following points should be seen:
 A brief statement of the general purpose of the study.
 The subject matter and topic studied.
 The locale of the study, where the data were gathered or the entity to which the data belong.
 The population or universe from which the respondents were selected. This must be large enough to
make organizations significant.
 The period of the study. This is the time, either months or years, during which the data were
gathered.

Now that you know what the scope and limitations section is, note that this is not an excuse to take
shortcuts in writing your research paper. Rather, you still need to justify why there are certain
limitations to your study and indicate your best effort to work within these constraints. Now, let’s
proceed to the significance of the study.

Significance of the study

This section creates a perspective for looking at the problem. It points out how your study relates to
the larger issues and uses a persuasive rationals to justify the reason for your study. It makes the purpose
worth pursuing. The significance of the study answers the questions:
 Why is your study important
 To whom is it important? Or who are the beneficiaries or who will benefit from the study?
 What benefit/s will occur if your study is done?
Beneficiaries are literally those who will benefit from the research paper that was written. In the
duration of writing a research paper, the writer aims their study for a certain group of people to profit
from his researches. They are an audience that the research will hold on impact to as the researcher wish
for them to be the main receivers of the impact of their study and research. It is in the section of the
research paper that explains who benefits from the research paper and why they are benefiting from it.
It is also in this chapter of the research paper wherein the significance of the study is justified and
explained as it will show the ways on how the research can affect the lives of the different groups and
organizations. To cite beneficiaries of research is simple but how the researcher shows the importance
and impact of their study in this portion of the paper towards the specific and targeted groups or
organizations is also crucial. Justifications may vary, such as: timeliness of the study; practical use of the
findings of the study; how it influence the larger population or a critical population; or does it answers
research gap or helps in theory building (importance of the concept or idea studied or shows relations of
variables).
