There are 4 major categories of Quantitative Research Designs mentioned in major sources in books and

the web. The contrasts between the four types essentially relates to the degree the researcher plans for control of

the factors within the experiment. Descriptive Research Design, a non-experimental Design, seeks to depict the

current status of an identified variable. The researcher does not start with a hypothesis, but ordinarily creates one

after the data is collected. Correlational Research Design attempts to decide the extent of a relationship between

two or more variables utilizing statistical data. Quasi-experimental Research, which is an experimental design,

endeavors to set up cause-effect relationships among the variables. And lastly, Experimental Research Design often

called true experimentation, uses the scientific strategy to establish the cause-effect relationship among a bunch of

variables that make up a study. Other types of Quantitative researches are the Survey Design, Comparative and Ex

Post Facto.

Central to QUALITATIVE RESEARCH are words; to quantitative research are NUMBERS. In this second type of

research, you can use the data gathering technique called SURVEY that uses QUESTIONNAIRE and INTERVIEW two

data-gathering instruments that are made up of QUESTIONS. Questions on things resulting from your experience

are called OPEN ENDED questions; those on your interpretative or critical thinking are called CLOSED-ENDED

questions. Survey is a data gathering TECHNIQUE while interview and questionnaire are data gathering Instruments.

Another quantitative gathering technique is the OBSERVATION that uses your SENSORY organs, specifically, your

EYES and EARS in collecting data. Watching and listening to people and things with your own eyes and ears is a

DIRECT kind of observation; with audio tape or video tape, is INDIRECT type of observation. EXPERIMENT is one

quantitative data collection technique that aims at controlling variables to discover CAUSE-EFFECT relationships.

This method involves independent VARIABLES and dependent variables. The VARIABLES receive treatment or

condition and, if it is given the performance rating of 95%, it will appear on a scale of measurement called NOMINAL

scale.
